5.2.3 External Validity<br />
This type <strong>of</strong> validity deals with establishing a domain in which the findings <strong>of</strong> the<br />
research are generalizable.<br />
In the context <strong>of</strong> the presented research, there was no possibility to draw a<br />
representative sample <strong>of</strong> the population on which the results could be generalized.<br />
However, the chosen research strategy allowed making generalizations based on<br />
the proximal similarity <strong>of</strong> cases.<br />
Although in the presented research work, the empirical studies were conducted<br />
using only two technological platforms (VCYO <strong>and</strong> Second Life) <strong>and</strong> some<br />
secondary data form one more (Active Worlds), most <strong>of</strong> the inferences made are<br />
platform-independent <strong>and</strong> consider only basic affordances <strong>of</strong> 3D CVEs. Therefore,<br />
the results can be generalized to the similar technological platforms that have the<br />
same basic affordances.<br />
Another generalization can be made for the context. Although in the presented<br />
research work, the empirical studies were conducted within one university course,<br />
in each <strong>of</strong> the studies some <strong>of</strong> the data were collected outside <strong>of</strong> this course. In<br />
some cases, additional data were collected from students taking other university<br />
courses, in some other cases – from other users <strong>of</strong> the platform or from the invited<br />
international visitors, including students, researchers, <strong>and</strong> the general public.<br />
In addition, the two latest empirical studies were conducted in conjunction with<br />
the events that extended their context. Virtual Science Fair extends the context <strong>of</strong><br />
the presented research into the area <strong>of</strong> presenting research results to the general<br />
public <strong>and</strong> connecting communities. Two virtual summer schools were used for<br />
evaluating ideas <strong>and</strong> concepts within the TARGET project <strong>and</strong> therefore extend the<br />
context <strong>of</strong> the presented research into the area <strong>of</strong> corporate learning. The latest<br />
empirical study on educational visualizations acted as a pre-study for CoCreate<br />
project, extending the context <strong>of</strong> this research into the area <strong>of</strong> creativity support.<br />
In order to make a conclusion, the results <strong>of</strong> the research work presented in this<br />
thesis can be generalized to other proximally similar cases, as it was discussed<br />
above.<br />
