6 Conclusions <strong>and</strong> Future Work<br />
This chapter summarizes the major implications <strong>of</strong> the conducted research,<br />
presents a summary <strong>of</strong> contributions, <strong>and</strong> outlines the directions for future work.<br />
6.1 Major conclusions<br />
The main goal <strong>of</strong> this research was partly achieved as the scope was narrowed<br />
down over time <strong>and</strong> specific research questions were set <strong>and</strong> answered. In<br />
consequence <strong>of</strong> the multidisciplinary nature <strong>of</strong> this research, many additional<br />
topics <strong>and</strong> parts <strong>of</strong> the context needed to be considered. Dealing with a<br />
multidisciplinary challenge, presented work provides a holistic approach that<br />
combines technological guidelines <strong>and</strong> social insights. The chosen approach<br />
provided necessary flexibility for adapting to the current constantly changing<br />
settings <strong>of</strong> the research work presented in this thesis.<br />
The results <strong>of</strong> the presented research work can be used by teachers, researchers,<br />
instructors, <strong>and</strong> technicians as a guideline for organizing educational activities<br />
using collaborative work with 3D content in CVEs.<br />
6.2 Summary <strong>of</strong> contributions<br />
Collaborative work on 3D content is the major activity that was studied in this<br />
research work. Two <strong>of</strong> the contributions (C1 <strong>and</strong> C2) describe the way <strong>of</strong> applying<br />
it in educational settings.<br />
C1: Typology <strong>of</strong> 3D Content <strong>and</strong> Visualization Means<br />
This framework is empirically based <strong>and</strong> suggests a way for describing,<br />
analyzing, <strong>and</strong> evaluating educational visualizations in 3D CVEs. It was<br />
observed that the use <strong>of</strong> the framework benefits the organization <strong>and</strong><br />
management <strong>of</strong> the studied educational activities. In addition, it helps<br />
students by identifying advantages <strong>and</strong> limitations <strong>of</strong> the 3D CVE<br />
technology <strong>and</strong> applying this knowledge in their project work.<br />
