editorial Volker Karow Chefredakteur Editor in Chief alu-Walzprodukte überzeugen in allen Märkten rolled aluminium products advancing on broad front Zwar bewegen sich die Aluminiumpreise seit Mitte Februar wieder nach unten, Dreimonatsware tendierte im April um 1.900 Dollar je Tonne, dennoch überraschte Aluminiumflagschiff Alcoa mit einem Gewinnsprung im ersten Quartal 2013. Alcoa-Chef Klaus Kleinfeld sprach von einem „starken Quartal“, Medien vereinzelt von einem „Turnaround“ der Aluminiumbranche. So weit wollen wir an dieser Stelle nicht gehen. Gewinne lassen sich auf unterschiedliche Weise steigern: weil man die Kosten senkt, die Produktivität erhöht oder am Markt mehr verkauft. Auf Alcoa treffen wohl alle drei Faktoren zu. Das Unternehmen hat im vergangenen Jahr Hüttenkapazitäten aus dem Markt genommen, seine Produktivität in allen Geschäftsbereichen verbessert, und auch die Verkaufszahlen im Downstream-Geschäft zeigen nach oben. Die globale Nachfrage nach Aluminium sieht Alcoa weiterhin auf einem starken Wachstumspfad. Das Unternehmen erwartet für das laufende Jahr ein Plus von sieben Prozent, getragen vor allem vom Transportsektor und insbesondere der Luftfahrtindustrie. Aber auch im Bauwesen, in der Verpackung und in sonstigen industriellen Endmärkten stehen die Zeichen auf solides Wachstum. Im Transportwesen spielt die Nachfrage nach Walzprodukten eine immer größere Rolle. Flugzeugbauer setzen traditionell auf Aluminium, und werden dies, trotz eines wachsenden Einsatzes von CFK-Bauteilen, auch weiterhin tun; die Branche boomt. In Pkw treten vermehrt Leichtbaulösungen aus Walzmaterial an die Seite von Gussteilen und Strangpressprodukten. Wer in der Architektur prestigeträchtige Projekte realisiert, setzt ebenfalls stark auf Aluminium. Auch in der Verpackung spielt das Metall, vor allem als Folie und dünnes Band, eine wichtige Rolle. Der Branchenverband EAFA erwartet für den Alufolien-Weltmarkt auf mittlere Sicht ein dynamisches Wachstum von fünf bis sechs Prozent im Jahr (siehe Interview auf den Seiten 34 ff), vor allem von der Nachfrage in Asien getragen. Doch auch in den hoch industrialisierten Ländern wird die Nachfrage nach Aluverpackungen für Getränke und Nahrungsmittel, für Pharmaprodukte und Kosmetika weiter steigen. Aluminium besticht in diesem Marktsegment durch seine absolute Barriere, die den Packstoff zu einem oft unverzichtbaren Verbundpartner macht und zu längerer Haltbarkeit beiträgt. Die Branche stellt ihre hohe Innovationskraft mit immer neuen, verbesserten Verpackungsprodukten regelmäßig unter Beweis. Davon zeugen auch einige Berichte in dieser Ausgabe. Aluminium prices may have been on the decline again since the middle of February, with the three-month’s price moving towards 1,900 dollars a tonne in April, but aluminium flagship company Alcoa still managed to spring a surprise with a jump in profits in the first quarter of 2013. Alcoa boss Klaus Kleinfeld called it a “strong quarter”; certain sections of the media even talked about a turnaround in the aluminium sector, but we don’t want to go so far as to say that here. There are different ways of increasing profits: one can reduce costs, improve productivity or sell more. All three factors contributed in the case of Alcoa: the company closed primary aluminium smelters last year, has improved productivity in all of its business units and has seen a rise in sales volumes in its downstream business. Alcoa continues to project strong growth in global demand for aluminium. The company is expecting a rise of seven percent this year, driven primarily by the transport sector and in particular by aerospace. But it also sees good signs for solid growth in building and construction, packaging and other industrial end markets. In the transport sector, demand for rolled aluminium products is playing an ever more important role. Aircraft manufacturers have traditionally used aluminium and will continue to do so despite the growing use of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic components; the industry is currently experiencing a boom. Alongside castings and extrusions, lightweight solutions based on rolled aluminium are also finding increasing use in cars. And architects of prestigious building projects also rely strongly on aluminium. The light metal is also playing an important role in packaging, especially as foil or thin strip. In the medium term, EAFA, the association that represents the sector, is expecting dynamic annual growth of five to six percent in the global market for aluminium foil, particularly as a result of demand from Asia (see our interview on pages 34 ff for details). Even in the highly industrialised countries, demand for aluminium for use in packaging for beverages, food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics will continue to grow. Aluminium scores in this market segment by providing an absolute barrier that often makes the metal an indispensable component of packaging, enhancing the shelf life of its contents. The sector regularly demonstrates its innovative capability with ever newer and improved packaging products. Some of these are also included in this issue. ALUMINIUM · 5/2013
