ALUMINIUM ROLLLINg INDUSTRY
Mertens: That should be discussed at the conference. One programme
item expressly provides for the discussion of new network ideas and
projects.
ALUMINIUM: In recent years EAFA has made efforts to increase the
involvement of aluminium smelters in projects. What has happened
in that area? To what extent is Glafco in Dubai supported by smelter
companies in the Gulf region?
Glimm: Aluminium foil is a product mainly manufactured from primary
aluminium, and accounts for some eight to nine percent of the
global primary aluminium market. However, the foil market is characterised
by great product variety. We deal with very heterogeneous
markets, many of which are relatively unknown to aluminium
producers. Just think of flexible packaging, in which aluminium foil
is only one part of a composite among several others, whereas the
segment as such accounts for over half of the aluminium foil market
in Europe. We are thankful to be supported by the IAI, the International
Aluminium Institute, which is a sponsor of the conference and
is also potentially interested in other projects. We also work with the
Gulf Aluminium Council at the organisational level. I would have
wished, however, that the downstream sector in general was given
more attention and support by smelter companies.
Mertens: Integrated companies are closer to the end markets; they
give more thought and attention to the supply chain than do the pure
smelting companies. The latter do not always see that EAFA’s activities
in marketing and in matters of sustainability are to the advan-
Mertens: Integrierte Unternehmen sind näher an den Endmärkten;
Welche Wachstumschancen sehen Sie in
