prickelnd frisch.“
leichtgewicht mit geschichte
Das „Abspecken“ der Getränkedose hat Tradition:
Wog die erste Bierdose 1935 noch 100
Gramm, konnte der Verpackungshersteller
Schmalbach-Lubeca – heute Ball Packaging
Europe – bereits 1951 eine Schwarzblechdose
von 83 Gramm einführen. Die Verwendung
von Aluminium sowie der Necking-Prozess
im oberen Bereich des Metallzylinders ermöglichten
weitere Gewichtsreduzierungen.
light as a feather, tough as ever
Ball Packaging Europe has succeeded in
reducing the weight of 33 cl aluminium
cans to just under 9.5 grams. This will significantly
reduce beverage cans’ ecological
footprint.
The seemingly minor drop in weight will have
major effects. In case that Ball switches the
production for all of its 33 cl cans to the new
ultra-light variant, it can save roughly 6,000
tonnes of aluminium each year – that is the
weight of more than 30 jumbo jets. The benefit
for the environment: Lower weight and less
material improve the can’s carbon footprint.
The walls of the ultra-light can are only
0.09 mm thick but still withstand internal
pressures of up to 6.2 bar – the same pressure
50 cl-Aluminiumdose,“erläutert Hirszowski.
Auch beim Recycling hat die Getränkedose
in den vergangenen Jahren deutliche
Fortschritte erzielt: In Deutschland werden
heute 96 von 100 verkauften Getränkedosen
recycelt. Weltweit gehört die Dosen zu der
am meisten recycelten Getränkeverpackung.
The manufacture of the ultra-light can will
hardly change. “The new, lighter cans can be
filled just as easily with our customers’ current
filling lines,” says Benoit Hirszowski, marketing
director at Ball Europe, and stresses:
“The new generation of lighter cans still optimally
protects beverages from the effects of
light and oxygen, and keep them fizzy and
fresh.”
A long history of lightweights
Lightweighting beverage cans is a time-honoured
tradition. Though the first beer cans
from 1935 still weighed 100 grams, the
packaging manufacturer Schmalbach-Lubeca
– today known as Ball Packaging Europe – introduced
a black-plate can that weighed 83
grams in 1951. The switch to lighter aluminium,
together with the necking process for
the upper section of the metal cylinder, made
it possible to cut the weight even further. In
recent years, Ball’s new CDL+ end has contributed
greatly to producing ever-lighter cans:
the opening for the aluminium disk, the socalled
blank, is now smaller. The can end is
also thinner than its competitors, meaning material
savings of up to twelve percent.
So as to put synergy effects to best use, the
new ultra-light can is also compatible with the
CDL+ end. “After an exciting development
phase and a battery of tests, the only open
question is where the new version will be
produced first. The next step will then be the
concrete implementation of a lighter-weight
50 cl aluminium can,” says Mr Hirszowski. ■
