■ Alu-Schraubverschlüsse – kein Weinverlust durch Korkgeschmack Aluminium screw caps – no wine wastage due to corking EAFA – a campaign directed above all at wine producers and traders. Are wine closures a new market to be captured? Glimm: Aluminium closures are a supplement of EAFA’s product portfolio, even though with a material thickness ranging from 190 to 230 microns closures made of aluminium are not strictly within the classical foil segment. The campaign is a response to the cork industry, which mounted a selective media campaign to attack aluminium closures for wine effecting some of our member companies. As a reaction we initiated an information campaign to highlight the advantages of aluminium closures – such as uniform wine quality, no taste of cork and no wine wastage due to corking. Mertens: Aluminium closures for wine are already internationally widely used. In Australia their market share for wines is about 80 percent and in New Zealand even well above 90 percent. Even in Europe their use is becoming more widespread, not only for cheap wines but also in the high-end segment and in gastronomy. There, greater flexibility exists because the choice of wines is much greater, which can be re-sealed simply and reliably. ALUMINIUM: What roles do resource efficiency and sustainability play for the positioning of aluminium foil in the market? Glimm: Customers are very aware of these issues. Carbon footprint reduction, the recyclability of packaging and the continual improvement of recycling quotas play a major part in the acceptance by purchasers of branded goods as well as the end consumer. Mertens: That is picked up very quickly by foil manufacturers in sales talks. Brand owners expect their packaging suppliers to pay serious attention to such issues and further advances to be made. This is an important objective for an association such as EAFA, namely to persuade its members or support them in joint projects, for example in the recycling field, as is currently being done in Great Britain in connection with aluminium food trays, household foil and aluminium closures, in collaboration with Alupro and the EAA. Glimm: As regards resource efficiency, in aluminium foil we have a high-performance packaging material – light, extremely thin and with an absolute barrier. Precisely for flexible packaging aluminium foil therefore provides tailor-made functionality with minimum use of packaging material, to ensure long shelf life for packaged goods. Mertens: Longer shelf life for products is nowadays a very important aspect for avoiding food waste as much as possible. So EAFA is collaborating in the Save Food initiative of the United Nations. With aluminium foil we have a packaging material ideally suited to that aim – especially since aluminium foil protects more resources than are needed for its own production. That is a thought which we are increasingly bringing before the public and stressing to our customers. ALUMINIUM: Mr Glimm, Mr Mertens, many thanks for this discussion. ■ 40 ALUMINIUM · 5/2013
