The novel open ring phosphotungstate [P 8 W 49 O 189 ] 44− (P 8 W 49 ) is unprecedented<br />

structurally <strong>and</strong> chemically. Other open <strong>and</strong> closed ring derivatives <strong>of</strong> the P 2 W 12 subunit are<br />

known in literature. Wang et al. have very recently reported<br />

[K 3 {GdMn(H 2 O) 10 }{HMnGd 2 (Tart)O 2 (H 2 O) 15 }{P 6 W 42 O 151 (H 2 O) 7 }] 11− <strong>and</strong><br />

[K 3 {GdCo(H 2 O) 11 }{P 6 W 41 O 148 (H 2 O) 7 }] 13− polyanions which contain a crown-type<br />

polyanion shell [{WO(H 2 O)} 3 {P 2 W 12 O 48 } 3 ] 30− (P 6 W 39 ) with the vacant site having three or<br />

two W(VI) ions in addition to the transition metal ions as “guest” ions. [14e] The three units <strong>of</strong><br />

P 2 W 12 are connected by three WO(H 2 O) fragments via corner-sharing octahedra, leading to<br />

the closed ring derivative <strong>of</strong> P 2 W 12 unit. Recently, our group reported the opened ring<br />

derivative <strong>of</strong> the P 2 W 12 unit, uranyl-containing “U-shaped” P 6 W 36 polyanion<br />

[Li(H 2 O)K 4 (H 2 O) 3 {(UO 2 ) 4 (O 2 ) 4 (H 2 O) 2 } 2 (PO 3 OH) 2 P 6 W 36 O 136 ] 25- . 17<br />
