<strong>10</strong>23 with a grade of C or better. This capstone document production<br />

course for administrative and office assistant training places<br />

heavy emphasis on using technology to produce various desktop<br />

publishing documents.<br />

BSNS 2113 - Small Business Management 3/0 (3)<br />

This course covers basic concepts and methods necessary for effective<br />

start-up and management of a small business. Topics include<br />

planning, legal aspects, financing, accounting, marketing, and<br />

management. Theoretical and practical learning exercises will be<br />

incorporated in the class. This course may be taken under the<br />

Pass/Fail grading option. See Pages 170-171.<br />

BSNS 2143 - Human Relations in Business 3/0 (3)<br />

This course is intended to prepare students to handle effectively<br />

the responsibility of relating to other people. The ultimate goal<br />

is to learn how to motivate individuals to work together productively,<br />

to satisfy their personal needs, and at the same time to<br />

meet organizational objectives.<br />

This course covers basic principles and procedures of personnel<br />

administration. Topics include: job analysis, staffing, training,<br />

performance appraisal, compensation, and labor relations.<br />

BSNS 2311 - Successful Customer Service 1/0 (1)<br />

This course focuses on essential customer service skills that help<br />

organizations accomplish their goals, deal with problems and<br />

complaints, win new customers and create loyal customers. The<br />

course concentrates on the key concepts and best practices involved<br />

in customer service, personal skills, and communication<br />

skills needed to deliver successful customer service.<br />

BSNS 2403 - Administrative Assistant<br />

Internship 0/15 (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Successful completion of the courses listed in the<br />

first four semesters of the Administrative Assistant curriculum<br />

and approval of program coordinator. The student will apply his<br />

or her knowledge and skills by working a minimum of 200 hours<br />

in a cooperating business under the supervision of a training sponsor<br />

and the instructor. The student will gain understanding of<br />

the administrative office procedures by discussing and analyzing<br />

on-the-job experiences with fellow students and the instructor.<br />

BSNS 2413 - Management Field Project 0/15 (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Successful completion of at least half of the courses<br />

required in the Business Management and Marketing curriculum,<br />

or consent of instructor. The student will apply his/her<br />

knowledge in a cooperating business or organization under the<br />

supervision of a training sponsor and the coordinator from the<br />

college. The student also will gain further understanding of the<br />

field of management through selected readings, assignments,<br />

and discussion of work experiences with fellow students and the<br />

program coordinator.<br />

BSNS 2423 – Internship Experience<br />

(Based on demand) 0/15 (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Approval of and successful completion of 16 semester<br />

hours of coursework from the Business Division and/or<br />

Technology Division. The student will apply his/her knowledge<br />

in a selected career field by working a minimum of 240 hours at<br />

a cooperating business under the supervision of a training sponsor<br />

and the program coordinator. This course may be repeated<br />

twice for credit.<br />

BSNS 2514 - Business Statistics 4/0 (4)<br />

Prerequisites: MATH 1424 and MATH 1453 with grades of C<br />

or better or all of the following: two years of high school algebra<br />

and one year of high school geometry with grades of C or better<br />

and appropriate assessment score. This course is designed to<br />

provide the business student with a firm foundation in descriptive<br />

and inferential statistics. Topics include descriptive methods,<br />

measures of central tendency and variability, elementary probability<br />

theory, elementary combinatorics, probability distributions,<br />

sampling techniques, confidence intervals for the mean<br />

or proportion, tests of hypotheses, chi square, correlation and<br />

linear regression, the F-test and one-way analysis of variance.<br />

Students cannot receive credit for both BSNS 2514 and MATH<br />

This course covers the basic principles and concepts of management<br />

including the functions of planning, organizing, staffing,<br />

leading, and controlling. Theoretical and practical learning<br />

exercises will be incorporated in the class.<br />

Chemistry<br />

CHEM 1504 - Basic Chemistry 3/2 (4)<br />

Prerequisite: Appropriate assessment score or a grade of C or<br />

better in one of the following: MATH 1113, MATH 1414, or<br />

one year of high school algebra. The student will be introduced<br />

to such fundamental concepts of chemistry as atomic structure,<br />

classification of compounds and chemical bonding. The student<br />

will acquire the basic knowledge upon which to build an understanding<br />

and appreciation of chemistry and its relationship<br />

to our world and life processes. AAS: Physical science (laboratory<br />

science) elective.<br />

CHEM 1514 - General Chemistry I 3/2 (4)<br />

Prerequisites: Either CHEM 1504 or one year of high school<br />

chemistry with a grade of C or better; and MATH 1424 with a<br />

C or better or appropriate assessment score; and ENGL 1413 with<br />

a grade of C or better or appropriate assessment score; or consent<br />

of instructor. The student will apply problem-solving techniques<br />

and quantitative laboratory experiments to analyze and interpret<br />

the principles of atomic structure, chemical bonding, states of<br />

matter, stoichiometry, oxidation-reduction, thermochemistry,<br />

the gas laws and coordination compounds. AAS: Physical science<br />

CHEM 1524 - General Chemistry II 3/2 (4)<br />

Prerequisite: MATH 1814 with a grade of C or better or appropriate<br />
