READ <strong>09</strong>61 - Effective Reading (Based on demand) (1)<br />

The student will apply basic reading skills in textbook reading.<br />

Skills will be applied to increase reading rate and comprehension.<br />

READ <strong>09</strong>84 - Preparation for College Reading I (4)<br />

Prerequisite: Appropriate reading assessment score. The student<br />

will work with word attack techniques, briefly reviewing<br />

consonant and vowel sounds. General spelling principles and<br />

vocabulary development using prefixes, suffixes, combining forms<br />

and context clues are important aspects of the course. Individual<br />

learning styles will be identified and reinforced. Study skills,<br />

including time management, note taking, study habits and testtaking<br />

techniques will be emphasized. This course is designed to<br />

prepare students for college-level coursework. See Page 118 under<br />

“Course numbering system.”<br />

READ <strong>09</strong>94 - Preparation for College Reading II (4)<br />

Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in READ <strong>09</strong>84 or appropriate<br />

reading assessment score. The student will identify the subject<br />

matter, recognize the main idea, discern fact from opinion, locate<br />

supporting details, and recognize general statements from specific<br />

statements. Individual learning styles and study skills introduced in<br />

READ <strong>09</strong>84 will be reviewed and expanded. Use of the dictionary,<br />

thesaurus, and other reference sources will be emphasized, as well<br />

as using the Learning Resource Center and on-line resources. This<br />

course is designed to prepare students for college-level coursework. See<br />

Page 118 under “Course numbering system.”<br />

READ 1484 - Introduction to College Reading (4)<br />

Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in READ <strong>09</strong>94 or appropriate<br />

reading assessment score. The student will develop strategies for<br />

effective comprehension of passages from essays to text chapters<br />

to books. Content will comprise a variety of reading formats,<br />

including social science, science, business, and technical. Emphasis<br />

will be on improving study skills, reading rate, flexibility<br />

and critical reading skills. Grades in this course will be calculated<br />

into student grade point averages.<br />

Respiratory Therapist<br />

Students in the Respiratory Therapist program are advised to<br />

consult the Code of Campus Affairs and Regulations, section<br />

11.4, Page 173. This regulation concerns the completion of all<br />

RESP, BIOL, and PSCI courses in the Respiratory Therapist<br />

curriculum with a grade of C or better.<br />

RESP 1113 - Respiratory Physiology 3/0 (3)<br />

Prerequisites: Admission to the Respiratory Therapist program,<br />

COMP 1521, BIOL 1554, and PSCI 1514 (BIOL 1554,<br />

PSCI 1514, and COMP 1521 may be taken concurrently).<br />

An in-depth study of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems.<br />

The student will learn the mechanics and the neuromuscular<br />

control of ventilation. The student also will become<br />

familiar with the transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide via<br />

the blood.<br />

RESP 1224 - Clinical I 0/12 (4)<br />

Prerequisites: RESP 1113 and RESP 1425; BIOL 1554 or PSCI<br />

1514; COMP 1521. The student will participate in respiratory<br />

therapy situations emphasizing patient assessment, oxygen<br />

therapy, bronchial hygiene skills, and aerosol medications. Each<br />

student in this course must have a physical exam, criminal<br />

background check without any disqualifying convictions and a<br />

negative drug screen.<br />

RESP 1425 - Respiratory Procedures I 4/2 (5)<br />

Prerequisites: Admission to the Respiratory Therapist program,<br />

COMP 1521, BIOL 1554, and PSCI 1514 (BIOL 1554, PSCI<br />

1514, and COMP 1521 courses may be taken concurrently). This<br />

course provides students with an introduction to respiratory care<br />

and the basic skills and equipment associated with this health care<br />

field. The respiratory skills that will be learned are respiratory assessment,<br />

humidity and aerosol therapy, medical gas therapy and<br />

professional behavior. Function, application, and maintenance<br />

of common respiratory equipment will be covered. Emphasis<br />

will be on production, storage, and delivery of medical gases,<br />

humidifiers, nebulizers, and oxygen appliances.<br />

RESP 1435 - Respiratory Procedures II 4/2 (5)<br />

Prerequisites: RESP 1113, RESP 1425, BIOL 1554, PSCI 1514,<br />

and COMP 1521. This course stresses interpretation of the<br />

findings of the respiratory assessment. The theory and administration<br />

of all therapies will be presented. Airway management<br />

will be introduced. The lab portion of this course will teach the<br />

student the technical skills needed to apply theory in a clinical<br />

situation.<br />

RESP 1445 - Respiratory Procedures III 5/0 (5)<br />

Prerequisites: RESP 1113, RESP 1425, BIOL 1554, PSCI 1514,<br />

and COMP 1521. This course will provide the student with an<br />

in-depth understanding of airway pharmacology and a general<br />

knowledge of the most common drugs used in the care of cardiopulmonary<br />

patients. The student will be instructed in the proper<br />

protective procedures both for the patients and themselves. This<br />

includes a general understanding of clinical microbiology as well<br />

as specific skills in a variety of infection control procedures.<br />

RESP 2212 - Clinical Medicine 2/0 (2)<br />

Prerequisites: RESP 1435 and RESP 1445. This course is designed<br />

to provide students with the basic knowledge and understanding<br />

to assess and treat patients with respiratory disease.<br />

RESP 2225 - Clinical II 0/15 (5)<br />

Prerequisites: RESP 1224, RESP 1435, and RESP 1445. Increased<br />

proficiency in skills and knowledge covered in RESP 1224 will be<br />

expected of students in this course. Airway management, arterial<br />

blood gases and mechanical ventilation will be stressed.<br />
