This course will acquaint the student with basic concepts and<br />
methods used in the study of sociology. Materials will cover major<br />

Prerequisite: SOCY 2513 or PSYC 1813 or ANTH 1713. The<br />

select appropriate data from personal experience, journalistic<br />
sources, and sociological materials in order to critique and analyze<br />

become familiar with and analyze current issues and social<br />

Prerequisite: SOCY 2513 or PSYC 1813 or ANTH 1713. This<br />
course examines the changing nature of the family in America.<br />
It considers how mates are selected, the nature of relationships<br />
within marriage, and the process and effects of ending or altering<br />
the marital situation. AAS: Social and behavioral science elective.<br />

SPAN 1503 - Conversational Spanish 3/0 (3)<br />
The student will be introduced to the basics of the Spanish language<br />
with emphasis on essential speaking and listening skills.<br />
The student will learn the fundamentals of idiomatic vocabulary,<br />
basic grammar and syntax, and introductory cultural traditions.<br />
This course is an excellent supplement to the regular Spanish<br />
sequence of SPAN 1514 and SPAN 1524 since it gives additional<br />
practice in basic conversational patterns. Students who choose to<br />
take the regular sequence can take this course prior to, concurrently<br />
with, or following SPAN 1514 and/or SPAN 1524. AAS:<br />
Humanities elective.<br />
SPAN 1514 - Elementary Spanish I 4/0 (4)<br />
Prerequisite: Appropriate assessment score or consent of instructor.<br />
This is a comprehensive elementary course including: grammar,<br />
oral and written composition, oral practice, and cultural<br />
studies. One research project and one oral presentation will be<br />
required. AAS: Humanities elective.<br />
SPAN 1524 - Elementary Spanish II 4/0 (4)<br />
Prerequisites: SPAN 1514 and an appropriate assessment score<br />
or consent of instructor. This course is a continuation of SPAN<br />
1514 with introduction of the preterite and subjunctive verbs<br />
along with emphasis on reading. A research project and oral<br />
presentation will be required.<br />
SPAN 2514 - Intermediate Spanish I<br />
(Based on demand) 4/0 (4)<br />
Prerequisite: SPAN 1524 and consent of instructor. This course<br />
provides the advanced student a general review of Spanish grammar<br />
and structure with an underpinning of Spanish culture.<br />
Sentence structure and verb usage along with other elements of<br />
grammar study will be the focus. The customs and traditions of<br />
the Spanish people will supply the themes for written work. A<br />
research paper and oral presentation will be required.<br />
SPAN 2524 - Intermediate Spanish II<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 2514. This is a survey of Spanish and Latin-<br />
American life and institutions intended as a background for<br />
literary studies and a better understanding of Spanish world<br />
contributions. A research project is required. AAS: Humanities<br />

SPAN 2713 - Advanced Communication in Spanish<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 2514. This course is designed to give intensive<br />
practice in communicating in Spanish. The course provides opportunities<br />
to improve listening, speaking, and writing abilities.<br />

SPCH 1553 - Introductory Speech 3/0 (3)<br />
Prerequisite: Appropriate assessment score or completion of<br />
ENGL 1413 with a grade of C or better or consent of instructor.<br />
The student will be introduced to basic principles of effective<br />
speaking and listening. Emphasis is on both understanding basic<br />
communication theory and on improving oral communication<br />
skills. The student will learn to prepare, organize, and deliver effective<br />
research-based informative and persuasive speeches. AAS:<br />

SPCH 1563 - Interpersonal Communication 3/0 (3)<br />
The student will study components of face-to-face interaction<br />
between individuals and in groups. Relationship skills will be<br />
explored, analyzed, and practiced. Among the topics covered are<br />
the communication process, verbal and nonverbal communication,<br />
cooperation and conflict management. Communication<br />
principles will be applied to a variety of settings including family<br />
and work situations. AAS: Humanities elective.<br />

SKIL <strong>09</strong>11 - Study Skills I (1)<br />
The student will develop effective study skills through practice<br />
focusing on appropriate use of the textbook; test-taking techniques;<br />
note taking, outlining and summarizing skills. Individual<br />
learning styles (visual, auditory, and tactile) will be identified and<br />
