circuits in accordance with the National Electric Code and local<br />

ELTR 1223 - Survey of Renewable Energy 3/0 (3)<br />

Prerequisites: Basic computer skills for word processing, performing<br />

internet searches, sending and receiving e-mail; basic<br />

math skills; and ability to use a calculator. This course explores<br />

current environmental, social, and technological issues that are<br />

driving interest in—and spreading the use of—renewable energy<br />

technology. From this background foundation, basic concepts<br />

of energy will be explored and explained, then spring-boarding<br />

into a general examination of energy conservation, and all the<br />

common modes of energy “generation” from renewable sources,<br />

including: Solar-Thermal; Solar-Photovoltaic; Wind Energy;<br />

Hydro-Power; and others. In addition, topics such as alternative<br />

means of space heating, water heating, and alternative transportation<br />

technologies will be explored.<br />

ELTR 1402 - Industrial Safety 2/0 (2)<br />

This course focuses on OSHA workplace safety requirements,<br />

and instills proper safety practices and procedures for working<br />

in an industrial or construction environment. The proper use of<br />

tools and equipment also will be discussed with an emphasis on<br />

their safe use.<br />

ELTR 1423 - Electrical/Electronic Drafting 2/2 (3)<br />

Students will draw, read, and interpret various types of diagrams<br />

and drawings used to represent electrical and electronic<br />

circuitry. Topics include board-drafting fundamentals; digital<br />

logic diagrams; relay and ladder logic diagrams; wiring diagrams;<br />

residential wiring; schematic symbols and diagrams; and<br />

printed circuit board artwork. Students will work manually on<br />

a drafting table and will engage in computer-aided drafting and<br />

computer simulation of various electrical and electronic circuits.<br />

Emphasis will be placed on developing the student’s ability to<br />

correctly understand and interpret electrical and electronic drawings<br />

and diagrams. All students will complete a project which<br />

involves drafting a proper schematic diagram, creating printed<br />

circuit board artwork, fabricating a printed circuit board, and<br />

assembling a working electronic circuit. Lab assignments require<br />

basic drafting tools.<br />

ELTR 2074 - DC & AC Rotating Machines 2.5/3 (4)<br />

Prerequisite: ELTR <strong>10</strong>64. This course will provide the student<br />

with a basic understanding of the operation and characteristics<br />

of various electric generators, alternators, motors, drive-train<br />

components, electronic motor drives, and simple motion control<br />

systems. Students will install and operate various kinds of motors,<br />

testing them for speed, torque, and efficiency. Basic motor-circuit<br />

troubleshooting will be emphasized. This course also explores<br />

pulse-width modulated motor-speed control, stepper motors, and<br />

servo motors and control systems. Motor and generator related<br />

projects may be employed as time permits.<br />

ELTR 2162 - Selected Studies I<br />

Prerequisites: ELTR <strong>10</strong>44 or equivalent and consent of instructor.<br />

Students will investigate the characteristics and operation of<br />

individual electronic devices and/or systems. This may include<br />

lasers, fiber optics, phase-locked-loops, active filers, microprocessors,<br />

microcomputer hardware and software, and others. A formal<br />

paper will be required upon completion of this course.<br />

ELTR 2172 - Selected Studies II<br />

(Based on demand) 1.5/1 (2)<br />

Prerequisites: ELTR 2162 and consent of instructor. This course<br />

is a continuation of ELTR 2162 - Selected Studies I.<br />

ELTR 2182 - Special Projects I<br />

(Based on demand) 1.5/1 (2)<br />

Prerequisites: ELTR <strong>10</strong>44 or equivalent and consent of instructor.<br />

Students will investigate the characteristics and operation<br />

of electronic devices and/or systems. Students will construct a<br />

personally funded project. The project along with a formal paper<br />

will be required upon completion of this course.<br />

ELTR 2192 - Special Projects II<br />

Prerequisites: ELTR 2182 and consent of instructor. This course<br />

is a continuation of ELTR 2182 - Special Projects I.<br />

ELTR 2302 - Electronics/Electrical Internship<br />

(By student request) 0/<strong>10</strong> (2)<br />

Prerequisites: Successful completion of a minimum of 30 credit<br />

hours of ELTR courses and approval of the program coordinator.<br />

Students will apply electronic knowledge in a cooperating business<br />

under the supervision of a training sponsor and the program<br />

coordinator. A work log will be kept, and a summary paper will<br />

be required upon completion of the experience.<br />

ELTR 2314 - Intro to Solar-Thermal Technology 2.5/3 (4)<br />

Prerequisites: ELTR 1223, ELTR<strong>10</strong>64, and ELTR <strong>10</strong>34. This<br />

course explores the use of Solar-Thermal technology for space<br />

heating and water heating. Students will be given theory and<br />

hands-on lab experience, sizing, installing and maintaining solarthermal<br />

heating systems. Basic hand tools must be supplied by the<br />

students. An overall goal of this course is to prepare the student<br />

for the NABCEP Solar-Thermal pre-certification exam.<br />

ELTR 2324 - Intro to Small-Wind Energy Tech 2.5/3 (4)<br />

Prerequisites: ELTR 1223, ELTR <strong>10</strong>64, ELTR 1174, ELTR<br />

2074, and ELTR 2414. This course explores the design, installation<br />

and use of Small-Wind Electrical Generator Systems for<br />

consumer and commercial applications. Students will be given<br />

theory and hands-on lab experience, sizing, installing and maintaining<br />

small-wind electrical generating systems. Basic hand<br />

tools must be supplied by the students. An overall goal of this<br />

course is to prepare the student for the NABCEP Small-Wind<br />

pre-certification exam.<br />

ELTR 2334 - Intro to Solar-Photovoltaic Tech 2.5/3 (4)<br />

Prerequisites: ELTR 1223 and ELTR <strong>10</strong>64. This course explores<br />

the design, installation and use of Solar-Photovoltaic power systems<br />

for consumer and commercial applications. Students will<br />

be given theory and hands-on lab experience, sizing, installing<br />

and maintaining solar-photovoltaic electrical generating systems.<br />

Basic hand tools must be supplied by the students. An overall<br />

goal of this course is to prepare the student for the NABCEP<br />

solar-photovoltaic pre-certification exam.<br />

ELTR 2414 - Industrial Motor Control 2.5/3 (4)<br />

Prerequisite: ELTR <strong>10</strong>64. The purpose and function of AC and<br />

DC motor controls is covered in this course. By using motor<br />

control symbols and line diagrams, students will install and<br />

troubleshoot various industrial control circuits found in a modern<br />

industrial setting. Basic tools must be supplied by the student.<br />
