Corporate and<br />
Continuing Education<br />
The KCC Office of Corporate and Continuing Education is<br />
designed to respond to the specialized training and staff development<br />
needs of business, industry, public service and governmental<br />
agencies as well as providing personal enrichment courses for the<br />
community.<br />
The Office of Corporate and Continuing Education:<br />
• Develops and implements customized training programs to<br />
keep businesses and their employees in step with changing<br />
technology.<br />
• Offers short-term and long-term employee development<br />
programs dealing with topics such as management<br />
techniques, organizational procedures, and skill enhancement.<br />
• Designs continuing education programs to meet the licensing/certification<br />
needs of various professional groups, i.e.<br />
nursing assistants, accountants, social workers, nursing<br />
home administrators, teachers, and respiratory care practitioners.<br />
• Offers programs during the day, in the evening, or on<br />
weekends at the employer’s site or on the KCC campus.<br />
• Provides highly qualified instructors from KCC or contracts<br />
with special consultants.<br />
• Offers programs at a very reasonable price compared with other<br />
training sources, including in-house training.<br />
• Offers classrooms equipped with presentation technology for<br />
meetings and trainings. Nominal fees apply. Catering is available.<br />
• Offers a wide variety of short-term personal enrichment courses<br />
on topics such as computing, health and wellness, home and<br />
garden, culinary, languages, hobbies, creative arts, and home<br />
and finances.<br />

Small Business<br />
Development Center<br />
The Office of Corporate and Continuing Education also<br />
operates a Small Business Development Center (SBDC), which<br />
is sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration and the<br />
Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.<br />
The SBDC is designed to meet the management assistance needs<br />
of small business. The program offers one-on-one confidential<br />
business counseling at no cost, workshops providing low-cost<br />
business education fundamentals, and access to an extensive library<br />
of business resources. Assistance also is provided to start-ups and<br />
existing businesses.<br />

Adult Education programs<br />
KCC offers courses and services to provide area residents an<br />
opportunity to further personal development, explore vocational<br />
interests, obtain a high school equivalency (GED) and prepare<br />
for entry to college credit courses and associate degree programs.<br />
These courses are preparation for college work, but do not apply<br />
as credits toward a degree.<br />
Practice tests and counseling are available at most sites for<br />
students who need information to predict success on the GED<br />
exam or in a high school credit or college class.<br />
The classes and services are provided at no cost to the student.<br />
Adult education courses are identified with the numbers 3000-<br />
8999 (for example, ENGL 3403 or ABEC 6211).<br />
Adult Basic Education (ABE)<br />
These courses provide students with basic reading, writing and<br />
math skills necessary to bring them to the eighth-grade level.<br />
They are offered on campus and at other locations throughout<br />
the district.<br />

General Educational Development (GED)<br />
These courses teach students the reading, writing, math, social<br />
studies, natural science, and state and federal constitution<br />
information necessary to pass the GED examinations. Classes<br />
are held on the KCC campus and at other locations throughout<br />
the district. Students are pretested to determine their skill levels<br />
so they may be placed in the class best suited to their abilities.<br />
When students have completed studies, they take the GED test<br />
at the KCC testing center located in the Division of Student and<br />
Workforce Services.<br />
KCC also offers online GED instruction for students who prefer<br />
this method of instruction. Online students must be registered in<br />
the Adult Education program.<br />

English as a Second Language (ESL)<br />
The ESL program provides non-native adults an opportunity<br />
to develop English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.<br />
There is no tuition charge for these classes. Assessment of language<br />
skills is conducted before entering class. ESL classes are held at<br />
the Lisieux Pastoral Center and First Church of the Nazarene in<br />
<strong>Kankakee</strong>.<br />
