classification of specific drugs, their therapeutic effect, indications<br />

and contraindications, side effects and correct dosages will<br />

be studied. The student will learn to administer drugs through<br />

the various routes. The student will learn to manage traumatic<br />

injuries, including problems relating to fluids, shock, respiratory<br />

and cardiac emergencies. Various hands-on skills will be<br />

discussed such as otoscope and opthamoscope examinations,<br />

rectal and vaginal exams, foley and nasogastric tube insertion.<br />

Selected clinical experiences will be provided to correlate with<br />

the course content.<br />

PMED 2418 - Emergency Medical Technician –<br />

Paramedic II 8/0 (8)<br />

Prerequisite: PMED 2408 or concurrent enrollment. The anatomy<br />

and physiology of the cardiovascular system will be studied<br />

with an in-depth emphasis on the structure, function, and electrical<br />

conduction system of the heart and the pathophysiology<br />

and emergency management of cardiovascular and respiratory<br />

emergencies. The student also will study the electrocardiogram<br />

(EKG) interpretation and treatment of various arrhythmias to<br />

include blocks and 12 lead EKG interpretation. Specific treatment<br />

techniques including cardiac pacing, synchronized cardioversion,<br />

defibrillation, and cardioversion will be discussed. A variety of<br />

common medical emergencies will be studied in-depth along<br />

with obstetric and gynecologic, pediatric-neonatal, psychiatric,<br />

behavioral, neurological, environmental emergencies and their<br />

management. The student will spend time on infectious and<br />

communicable diseases; and illness and injury prevention.<br />

PMED 2437 - Emergency Medical Technician –<br />

Paramedic III 0/14 (7)<br />

Prerequisite: PMED 2418 or concurrent enrollment. The clinical<br />

rotation requirements for this class are designed to augment each<br />

phase of classroom training. To build upon previous learning<br />

experiences in PEPC 1324, each student will rotate through<br />

specified patient care areas of the hospital and will work under<br />

the direct supervision of a registered nurse or physician. The focus<br />

of the hospital clinical experiences will be to further understand<br />

and to master the practical skills of an EMT-Paramedic while in<br />

a controlled environment. The student will spend clinical time<br />

in the emergency department, obstetrical unit, medical intensive<br />

care unit, surgical intensive care unit, pediatric department, psychiatric<br />

unit and the morgue. Each student in this course must<br />

have a physical exam, criminal background check without any<br />

disqualifying convictions and a negative drug screen.<br />

PMED 2447 - Emergency Medical Technician –<br />

Paramedic IV 0/14 (7)<br />

Prerequisite: PMED 2437 or concurrent enrollment. The course is<br />

designed to provide the paramedic student with educational experience<br />

in the field of an Advanced Life Support (ALS) unit. The<br />

student will function under the supervision of an EMT-Paramedic<br />

who has been licensed and active for at least four years and who<br />

is in good standing with the Emergency Medical Services system.<br />

The student is required to complete a minimum number of hours<br />

of field experience with a system-approved ALS agency. Students<br />

who are not affiliated with an approved resource hospital EMS<br />

System will be required to obtain a minimum of 50 percent of their<br />

ambulance ride time and seven of <strong>10</strong> of their ALS calls with an<br />

approved resource hospital ALS agency. Each student in this course<br />

must have a physical exam, criminal background check without<br />

any disqualifying convictions and a negative drug screen.<br />

Philosophy<br />

PHIL 2513 - Introduction to Philosophy 3/0 (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Appropriate assessment score or completion of<br />

ENGL 1413 with grade of C or better or consent of instructor.<br />

This course encourages students to develop a tolerant, open and<br />

critical mind as well as a philosophical attitude. The major topics<br />

to be reviewed in the course are the value of philosophy, metaphysics<br />

(reality and illusion), existentialism, knowledge, logic,<br />

ethics, religion, death, art, and Eastern philosophy. Students also<br />

will discuss the philosophical implications of various contemporary<br />

social issues – e.g., capital punishment, euthanasia, abortion,<br />

etc. AAS: Humanities elective. IAI: H4 900 Humanities.<br />

PHIL 2523 - Ethics 3/0 (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Appropriate assessment score or completion of<br />

ENGL 1413 with grade of C or better or consent of instructor.<br />

This course presents an introduction to a philosophy that probes<br />

the nature of moral theory. It explores possible ways of assessing<br />

what is “good,” including evaluations of society and individual<br />

notions of morality. There will be an analysis of principal ethical<br />

theories and their practical application to moral problems and<br />

decisions. AAS: Humanities elective. IAI: H4 904 Humanities.<br />

PHIL 2533 - Logic 3/0 (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Appropriate assessment score or completion of<br />

ENGL 1413 with grade of C or better or consent of instructor.<br />

Logic is the skill of constructing and assessing sound arguments.<br />

Students will acquire the skill to construct and present correct<br />

arguments and thereby gain increased insight into the principles<br />

of different kinds of reasoning. Students will express ideas clearly<br />

and precisely through writing. AAS: Humanities elective. IAI: H4<br />

906 Humanities.<br />

PHIL 2543 - Death & Dying 3/0 (3)<br />

This course will provide a sense of the meaning of mortality from<br />

both historical and contemporary perspectives. It will probe<br />

various understandings of the experience of dying, examine the<br />

impact of death on those who survive and discuss the dilemmas<br />

death poses for us today. AAS: Humanities elective.<br />

Physical Education<br />

The college reserves the right to require a physical examination<br />

or the written consent of the student’s physician prior<br />

to allowing a student to participate in certain physical activities<br />

classes.<br />

PHEC 1611 - Physical Education Activities (Co-ed) 0/2 (1)<br />

The student will participate in selected physical activities. He or<br />

she will develop his or her skill proficiency and will demonstrate<br />

understanding of the rules and strategies of games, through both<br />

written and physical tests. The college may offer such activities<br />

as recreation (provides limited activities), golf, tennis, bowling,<br />

weight training, aerobics, scuba diving, Latin dance and enrollment<br />

in the Fitness Center. These courses may be repeated<br />

for credit. Some Physical Education Activities may be taken<br />

under the pass/fail grading option, see Page 170. Consult the<br />

class schedule or course instructor for which activities may be<br />

taken pass/fail.<br />
