HLTH 1353 - Basic CPT Coding 3/0 (3)<br />

Prerequisite: HLTH 1312. This course introduces the theory and<br />

structure of Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding.<br />

Through course exercises and materials, the student will become<br />

proficient at identifying and accurately assigning CPT codes to<br />

health records.<br />

HLTH 1363 - Insurance Procedures 3/0 (3)<br />

Prerequisite: HLTH 1312, HLTH 1343 and HLTH 1353.<br />

HLTH 1343 and HLTH 1353 may be taken concurrently with<br />

HLTH 1363. This course introduces the basics of medical insurance<br />

and reimbursement procedures. Students will become<br />

familiar with types of insurance and coverage as well as electronic<br />

claims processing and will receive an overview of coding systems<br />

and reimbursement processing.<br />

HLTH 1372 - Ethical & Legal Issues 2/0 (2)<br />

Prerequisite: HLTH 1312. This course will examine legal and<br />

ethical issues related to the health care field. An emphasis will<br />

be placed on federal and state health care legislation and regulations.<br />

HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability<br />

Act) rules and regulations and their influence on the health care<br />

field will be discussed. Legal cases affecting health care will be<br />

analyzed. An ethical decision making framework to solve ethical<br />

problems encountered in the health care field will be utilized.<br />

HLTH 1492 - Coding Practicum 0.5/3 (2)<br />

Prerequisites: HLTH 1343, 1353, 1363, and 1372. This course<br />

will provide students with experience performing coding and<br />

billing by completing case studies in a simulated medical office<br />

setting. Students will gain experience in coding procedures and<br />

diagnoses, filing insurance claims, troubleshooting rejected<br />

claims, catching common coding errors, evaluating compliance<br />

with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability<br />

Act), and keeping the policy manual up to date. Select medical<br />

office procedures also will be emphasized.<br />

HLTH 1404 - Phlebotomy Techniques 3/2 (4)<br />

Prerequisite: High school diploma or GED. This is a fourcredit-hour<br />

course which consists of lecture and laboratory<br />

practice in the proper collection of laboratory specimens. The<br />

lecture and lab sessions include terminology, anatomy and<br />

physiology appropriate to phlebotomy, phlebotomy techniques,<br />

electrocardiography, safety, quality control, attitudes,<br />

and professionalism. It provides proper job skills for effective<br />

functioning as part of the medical lab team and includes<br />

instruction, demonstration, and clinical practice of blood collection,<br />

and communication techniques consistent with standards<br />

of competency. A Health Care Provider CPR certification is<br />

required before the completion of this course.<br />

HLTH 1412 - Phlebotomy Techniques Practicum 0/8 (2)<br />

Prerequisite: HLTH 1404 with a grade of C or better or consent<br />

of instructor. HLTH 1412 cannot be taken more than 13<br />

months after completing HLTH 1404, or MEDT <strong>10</strong>43. This<br />

course consists of 120 hours of clinical rotation practice at an<br />

affiliate hospital or clinic. This supervised training will emphasize<br />

competency in blood collection, specimen handling and processing,<br />

safety, quality control, communication skills, attitude, and<br />

professionalism for effective functioning as part of the medical<br />

lab team. Upon completion of the clinical rotation, students will<br />

be eligible to take the Phlebotomy certification exam offered<br />

by certifying agencies. Each student in this course must have a<br />

physical exam, criminal background check with no disqualifying<br />

convictions and a negative drug screen. Physical exam forms are<br />

available in Student Services.<br />

HLTH 1513 - Nutrition 3/0 (3)<br />

This course will introduce the student to concepts and principles<br />

of normal nutrition. Students will examine the functions<br />

of nutritional components, digestion, metabolism, and energy<br />

requirements. Nutritional requirements and the relationship<br />

between health and nutrition throughout the life cycle will be<br />

studied. An emphasis will be placed on the practical application<br />

of nutritional concepts in everyday life. Course may transfer as<br />

health or other elective. Consult adviser.<br />

HLTH 2<strong>10</strong>2 - Intravenous Therapy for Nurses 1.5/1 (2)<br />

Prerequisite: Current Illinois LPN or RN license. This course<br />

is designed to provide the RN or LPN with the knowledge and<br />

skills to perform beginning IV therapy tasks. Students will receive<br />

classroom preparation, clinical lab practice, and supervised<br />

administration of IV therapy in the acute care setting. Starting<br />

IV therapy, troubleshooting, and medication administration<br />

will be included.<br />

to 1648 3/0 (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Appropriate assessment score or ENGL 1413 with<br />

a grade of C or better or consent of instructor. This course traces<br />

the development of Western civilization from ancient times to<br />

the religious wars of the 17th century. It focuses on the rise of<br />

civilizations in the Middle East, the influence of classical Greece<br />

and Rome, the rise and spread of Christianity and Islam, European<br />

society in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the causes<br />

and effects of the Protestant and Catholic Reformations. AAS:<br />

Humanities elective. IAI: H2 901 Humanities.<br />

HIST 1533 - History of Western Civilization<br />

1648 to the Present 3/0 (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Appropriate assessment score or ENGL 1413 with<br />

a grade of C or better or consent of instructor. This course<br />

traces the development of Western Civilization from the birth<br />

of the European state system in the mid-17th century to the<br />

present. It will focus on the develop ment of constitutionalism<br />

and absolutism; the impacts of the Atlantic economy and<br />

the Enlightenment; the French Revolution and the Napoleonic<br />

period; new political ideologies such as liberalism, nationa<br />

lism, and socialism; the Industrial Revolution; the global causes<br />

and effects of European imperialism, World Wars, and the Cold<br />

War; the rise of totalitarian dictatorships; and the post-Cold War<br />

world. AAS: Humanities elective. IAI: H2 902 Humanities.<br />

HIST 1534 - History of Western Civilization<br />

through Independent Study & Travel 1/9 (4)<br />

Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Students will travel through<br />

various foreign countries for an in-depth study of each specific<br />

country’s contributions to Western civilization. The course work<br />

involves attendance at orientation sessions, independent study for<br />

the educational tour, a formal writing assignment, and participation<br />

in the foreign country tour. This course may be repeated<br />

twice for credit. AAS: Humanities elective.<br />
