CNST 1413 - Introduction to Building<br />
Construction 3/0 (3)<br />
Students will be introduced to the principles and practices of<br />
residential and light commercial building operations. Lectures<br />
will cover history, innovative practices and materials, current<br />
developments, and typical employment opportunities.<br />
CNST 1423 - Construction Materials & Methods 2/2 (3)<br />
This course is designed to familiarize students with typical<br />
materials and methods used in residential and light commercial<br />
construction. Topics will include the affect of regulation and<br />
material selection on building costs, as well as factors affecting<br />
material strength and resilience.<br />
CNST 1444 - Surveying with Civil Applications<br />
(formerly Survey/Layout & Measurement) 2.5/3 (4)<br />
Prerequisite: MATH 1113 or appropriate assessment score. This<br />
course will familiarize the student with job sites. Surveying<br />
techniques and site layout will be discussed, as well as ground<br />
elevations and control points, and contour lines. Students will<br />
learn about topographic plans, plats of survey, and general site<br />
plans. A general overview of village zoning and county planning<br />
will be introduced.<br />
CNST 2413 - Mechanical Systems for Buildings 3/0 (3)<br />
Prerequisites: CNST 1413. This course introduces students to<br />
the design and operation of electrical, plumbing, and HVAC<br />
systems. Topics will include requirements during construction,<br />
scheduling, installation procedures, and energy consumption.<br />
CNST 2423 - Masonry Skills 3/0 (3)<br />
This course is designed to familiarize students with formwork<br />
analysis and design. Students will be introduced to form setting,<br />
placing, finishing and curing procedures, the effect of soil<br />
characteristics, and design codes.<br />
CNST 2433 - Estimating & Bidding 3/0 (3)<br />
Prerequisites: DRFT 1154. This course is an introduction to<br />
material costs, take-offs, productivity, manual and computer cost<br />
estimation, and project bidding. Students will use blueprints and<br />
project specifications to submit bids for a particular project.<br />
CNST 2443 - Building Codes & Inspection 3/0 (3)<br />
This course is an orientation to the various international building<br />
codes in effect from the International Code Council, and the<br />
codes written by and specifically for the state of Illinois. Students<br />
will review various codes and their applications and will become<br />
familiar with the various jurisdictions for code enforcement and<br />
their operations both locally and statewide. Students will conduct<br />
various local code enforcement administrative and field activities,<br />
and will be oriented on the ICC Certification System for both<br />
Code Administrators and Code Officials.<br />
CNST 2453 - Professional Practice<br />
(Based on demand) 0/15 (3)<br />
Prerequisites: Completion of second semester CNST courses<br />
and consent of instructor. Students will apply their construction<br />
knowledge in a cooperating business under the supervision<br />
of a training sponsor and the program coordinator. A work log<br />
will be maintained, and a summary paper will be required upon<br />
completion of the experience.<br />
Cosmetology<br />
COSM <strong>10</strong>18 - Cosmetology – Basic I 8/4 (8)<br />
The student will identify safety and decontamination procedures<br />
required for safe and sanitary customer services in the cosmetology<br />
industry. The student will learn to shampoo and condition<br />
the hair and scalp, use a blow dryer and curling iron to style the<br />
hair, and also will learn to sculpt and mold hair, create pin curls,<br />
and use roller sets and perform comb-outs. (Pending approval.)<br />
COSM <strong>10</strong>28 - Cosmetology – Basic II 8/4 (8)<br />
Prerequisite: COSM <strong>10</strong>18. In this course, the student will learn<br />
the theory of and will demonstrate skills in the following: application<br />
of temporary, semi-permanent, and permanent hair color;<br />
decolorization of hair; chemical texturizing hair with permanent<br />
waving; use of relaxers; and curl reformation with soft curl perm<br />
techniques. The student also will learn techniques for shaping<br />
hair with shears or a razor. (Pending approval.)<br />
COSM 1118 - Cosmetology – Intermediate I 8/4 (8)<br />
Prerequisite: COSM <strong>10</strong>28. In this course, the student will learn<br />
the theory of color and, upon completion, will be able to formulate<br />
color application based on a person’s original hair color.<br />
Various techniques used for hair color services in the salon will<br />
be discussed. The theory and practice of chemical texturizing<br />
will be explored, including the latest techniques involved in perm<br />
waving, relaxing and curl reformation. (Pending approval.)<br />
COSM 1128 - Cosmetology – Intermediate II 8/4 (8)<br />
Prerequisites: Concurrent enrollment in COSM 1118. In this<br />
course, the student will have the understanding of what it takes<br />
to open and operate a salon, the basic understanding of chemistry<br />
as it relates to cosmetology, and the components and benefits<br />
of electricity. The student will also learn about anatomy and<br />
physiology and how it relates to the services that are performed<br />
in the salon. (Pending approval.)<br />
COSM 1218 - Cosmetology – Advanced I 8/4 (8)<br />
Prerequisite: COSM 1128. The student will learn to effectively<br />
communicate with the client to determine the proper solution<br />
to achieve the client’s desired results for customizing a service.<br />
The student also will continue to perform previously mastered<br />
techniques, to perfect the skills needed for a successful career in<br />
cosmetology. (Pending approval.)<br />
COSM 1229 - Cosmetology – Advanced II 0/18 (9)<br />
Prerequisite: COSM 1218. The student will finish all required<br />
theory work, practical assignments, and final written and practical<br />
