Prerequisites: COSC 1513, BSNS 2311, HLTH 1312, and<br />

HLTH 1372. This course is designed to provide theoretical and<br />

practical applications for performing administrative and general<br />

procedures in the medical office/clinic setting. Topics include—<br />

but are not limited to—professionalism; administrative duties;<br />

office work; communication with members of the health care<br />

team and patients; interacting with patients; financial functions<br />

and responsibilities; legal and ethical boundaries; and safety<br />

practices. This course will identify critical job functions and<br />

tasks needed by the medical assistant to deliver appropriate,<br />

high quality healthcare. This course includes observation and<br />

performance of administrative procedures in a laboratory setting.<br />

HLTH 1236 - Medical Assistant Clinical Procedures 4/4 (6)<br />

Prerequisites: BIOL 1554, HLTH 1312, HLTH 1372, BSNS<br />

2311; and ENGL 1413 and READ 1484 with grades of “C” or<br />

better within the last 5 years; or appropriate assessment score.<br />

This course is designed to provide the theoretical and practical<br />

applications of performing clinical procedures in the medical<br />

office/clinic setting. Topics include—but are not limited to—<br />

patient assessment, basic psychological principles, physical examination<br />

and patient treatments, vital signs, patient education,<br />

medical emergencies, assisting the physician in medical specialty<br />

examinations and minor surgery. Students will learn the theoretical,<br />

technical and practical aspects of infection control, and<br />

medical and surgical asepsis. This course includes observation<br />

and performance of clinical procedures in a laboratory setting.<br />

HLTH 1243 - Medical Assistant Laboratory<br />

Procedures 2/2 (3)<br />

Prerequisites: BIOL 1554, HLTH 1312, and HLTH 1372. This<br />

course provides the student with both the theory and practical<br />

applications of the laboratory procedures in medical assisting with<br />

an emphasis on performing CLIA-approved point of care testing in<br />

urinalysis, hematology, chemistry, immunology and microbiology.<br />

Non-waived testing may be performed as exercises. Topics include<br />

specimen processing, record keeping, laboratory infection control,<br />

quality assessment, quality control and normal ranges of tests<br />

performed. This course includes observation and performance of<br />

procedures in a laboratory setting. (Pending approval.)<br />

HLTH 1253 - Medical Assistant Pharmacology 2/2 (3)<br />

Prerequisites: BIOL 1554, HLTH 1312, HLTH 1372, BSNS<br />

2311; and MATH 1414 within in the last two years with a<br />

grade of C or better; or appropriate assessment score. This course<br />

introduces the principles and practical applications of pharmacology<br />

for the medical assistant. Topics include general aspects<br />

of pharmacology, legal and ethical issues in pharmacology, the<br />

mathematics of calculating drug doses correctly, the principles<br />

and practices of medication administration, and medications<br />

related to body systems and patient education. This course includes<br />

observation and performance of clinical procedures in a<br />

HLTH 1292 - Medical Assistant Externship 0/<strong>10</strong> (2)<br />

Prerequisites: HLTH 1224, HLTH 1243, HLTH 1253, and<br />

HLTH 1236 with a grade of C or better. This course consists<br />

of 160 hours of clinical rotation practice at an affiliate ambulatory<br />

health care site. The supervised training will emphasize<br />

competency in medical assistant clinical, administrative and<br />

general skills as defined by the American Association of Medical<br />

Assistants. Prior to enrollment, each student must have health<br />

insurance, current CPR card, current physical exam, criminal<br />

background check and drug testing. Physical exam forms are<br />

available in KCC’s department of Student Services. (Pending<br />

HLTH 1312 - Medical Terminology 2/0 (2)<br />

This course is designed to give both allied health professionals and<br />

health consumers a working knowledge of medical vocabulary. The<br />

course offers a systematic study of medical words that relate to body<br />

systems, anatomical structures, medical processes and procedures,<br />

and a variety of diseases that afflict the human body.<br />

HLTH 1343 - Basic ICD-9-CM 3/0 (3)<br />

Prerequisite: HLTH 1312. This course introduces the theory<br />

and structure of the International Classification of Disease - 9<br />

Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM). Through the use of course<br />

materials, the student will become proficient at identifying and<br />

accurately assigning ICD-9-CM codes to health records.<br />
