Participation in activ<strong>it</strong>ies can vary <strong>from</strong> undertaking <strong>the</strong> activ<strong>it</strong>y to full independence or w<strong>it</strong>h a<br />

variety of <strong>support</strong> levels. For example, some people may require hand-over-hand <strong>support</strong> or need<br />

to be shown or guided to participate in activ<strong>it</strong>ies. O<strong>the</strong>rs may be able to perform tasks relatively<br />

independently. People do not have to ‘pass’ an activ<strong>it</strong>y by doing <strong>it</strong> independently. Ra<strong>the</strong>r, w<strong>it</strong>h<br />

<strong>support</strong> <strong>the</strong>y can enjoy an activ<strong>it</strong>y, do <strong>it</strong> regularly over time and have o<strong>the</strong>r activ<strong>it</strong>ies of choice<br />

introduced.<br />

Decisions concerning <strong>the</strong> PCAS opportun<strong>it</strong>ies to pursue w<strong>it</strong>hin group homes and <strong>the</strong> local<br />

commun<strong>it</strong>y should be made in consultation w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> person. Ideally, this should occur one-onone<br />

or as part of a small group and be planned, documented and reviewed via Active Support<br />

documentation – Activ<strong>it</strong>y and Support Plans, Monthly Opportun<strong>it</strong>y Recording Plans and<br />

Learning Logs.<br />

PCAS is for all people, irrespective of <strong>the</strong> degree of disabil<strong>it</strong>y or presence of o<strong>the</strong>r issues such as<br />

<strong>behaviour</strong>s of concern.<br />
