Based on <strong>the</strong>se assumptions strategies such as rewards and punishments have been used,<br />

that is:<br />

• pos<strong>it</strong>ive and negative consequences for inappropriate <strong>behaviour</strong> (lim<strong>it</strong>ing access to<br />

commun<strong>it</strong>y, w<strong>it</strong>hholding personal <strong>it</strong>ems, using threatening or intimidating language)<br />

• w<strong>it</strong>hdrawal of attention ( time out, seclusion, ignoring)<br />

• avoiding opportun<strong>it</strong>ies for recogn<strong>it</strong>ion and acknowledgment.<br />

As a consequence to <strong>the</strong>se strategies <strong>the</strong> person w<strong>it</strong>h a disabil<strong>it</strong>y:<br />

• learns to do whatever <strong>the</strong> adult tells <strong>the</strong>m<br />

• learns that those w<strong>it</strong>h difficult <strong>behaviour</strong>s are less worthy<br />

• are more likely to develop a self-concept of being ‘bad’<br />

• may learn that <strong>the</strong>y can gain more power and influence w<strong>it</strong>h inappropriate <strong>behaviour</strong><br />

• may learn to use similar ignoring, excluding, punishment and reward approaches w<strong>it</strong>h o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />
