3. Coping skills<br />

Sometimes people show <strong>behaviour</strong>s of concern because <strong>the</strong>y are frustrated, disappointed,<br />

angry or scared and this provides <strong>the</strong>m w<strong>it</strong>h some relief. It could be that <strong>the</strong> <strong>behaviour</strong> helps<br />

<strong>the</strong> person cope w<strong>it</strong>h a bad s<strong>it</strong>uation (o<strong>the</strong>rs may comfort <strong>the</strong> person, give <strong>the</strong>m something<br />

else to do or speed up <strong>the</strong>ir access to something <strong>the</strong>y have been denied). On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand<br />

just performing <strong>the</strong> <strong>behaviour</strong> may help <strong>the</strong> person calm down because <strong>it</strong> allows <strong>the</strong>m to vent<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir feelings.<br />
