The replacement skill must be based on a person’s skill base and <strong>the</strong>y must be able to<br />

successfully achieve <strong>the</strong> <strong>behaviour</strong> requested effectively and efficiently.<br />

The replacement skill is something that is socially acceptable and in accordance w<strong>it</strong>h social<br />

conventions.<br />

Three types of replacement skills<br />

1. Communication skills<br />

When thinking about a more appropriate and efficient way <strong>the</strong> person can communicate <strong>the</strong><br />

same message as <strong>the</strong> <strong>behaviour</strong>, consider whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> person is an intentional or unintentional<br />

communicator. It is important to choose a way of communicating that builds on <strong>the</strong> person’s<br />

current communication strengths and will be relatively easy for <strong>the</strong> person to learn.<br />

Let’s go back to our scenario w<strong>it</strong>h Bob. What pos<strong>it</strong>ive <strong>behaviour</strong> <strong>support</strong> strategies can we<br />
