be impacting on your abil<strong>it</strong>y to provide effective <strong>support</strong> to people who show <strong>behaviour</strong>s of<br />

“W<strong>it</strong>hout <strong>the</strong> <strong>right</strong> att<strong>it</strong>ude, no matter how good <strong>the</strong> <strong>behaviour</strong> <strong>support</strong> plan looks on paper,<br />

<strong>it</strong> won’t work.”<br />

Negative att<strong>it</strong>udes block people’s abil<strong>it</strong>y to carry out a pos<strong>it</strong>ive <strong>behaviour</strong> <strong>support</strong> genuinely and<br />

w<strong>it</strong>h integr<strong>it</strong>y. The following set of questions will help you to analyse your own att<strong>it</strong>udes. Each<br />

of <strong>the</strong>m is about <strong>the</strong> things you actually do and may give you insight into your own underlying<br />

att<strong>it</strong>udes.<br />

1. Do you introduce <strong>the</strong> person to vis<strong>it</strong>ors?<br />

2. Do you talk in front of <strong>the</strong> person about <strong>the</strong>m as though <strong>the</strong>y can’t hear or<br />

understand what you’re saying?<br />

3. Where possible, do you offer choices to <strong>the</strong> person in a way that is<br />

meaningful?<br />

4. Do you search for enjoyable, stimulating and fulfilling things for <strong>the</strong> person<br />

to be involved in that is based on <strong>the</strong>ir preferences?<br />

5. Do you include <strong>the</strong> person in decision making about <strong>the</strong> things that have<br />

an impact on <strong>the</strong>ir lives?<br />

6. Do you strive to actively <strong>support</strong> <strong>the</strong> person in <strong>the</strong> flow of activ<strong>it</strong>ies that<br />

happen every day?<br />

7. Do you talk to <strong>the</strong> person w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> same level of respect you show towards<br />

people w<strong>it</strong>hout a disabil<strong>it</strong>y?<br />

8. Are you pol<strong>it</strong>e in <strong>the</strong> way you talk w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> person?<br />

9. Do you knock on <strong>the</strong> door of <strong>the</strong> person’s room before entering?<br />

10. Do you ensure <strong>the</strong> person is provided w<strong>it</strong>h privacy when helping <strong>the</strong>m w<strong>it</strong>h<br />

personal care activ<strong>it</strong>ies?<br />

11. When vis<strong>it</strong>ors come to <strong>the</strong> house do you take <strong>the</strong>m on through <strong>the</strong> house,<br />

including <strong>the</strong> person’s bedroom?<br />

12. Do you think about how <strong>the</strong> person might be feeling and acting on <strong>the</strong>se<br />

thoughts? (do you wonder whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y are cold or hot? Disappointed?<br />

Angry? Sad? Jealous? Confused? Unwell? Scared?)<br />

13. Do you often wonder what <strong>it</strong> must be like to live in a shared <strong>support</strong>ed<br />

accommodation?<br />

14. Do you ever put yourself in <strong>the</strong> person’s shoes or try to imagine <strong>the</strong> world<br />

through <strong>the</strong>ir eyes?<br />
