INTRODUCTION<br />

COMPUTER SCIENCE<br />

The Computer Science Department at <strong>LaGrange</strong> <strong>College</strong> has several goals.<br />

With the goal of computer literacy for our general student population,<br />

courses are offered to acquaint students with microcomputer applications<br />

and networks. For students who want further study in computer science, the<br />

following options are available:<br />

A minor in computer science<br />

B.A. degree in computer science<br />

B.A. degree in computer science with a concentration in business<br />

B.A. degree in computer science with a concentration in graphic design (45<br />

semester hours)<br />

B.S. degree in computer science<br />

LEARNING OBJECTIVES<br />

Graduates from the B.A. and B.S. degree programs at <strong>LaGrange</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

should be able to do each of the following:<br />

• Write programs in a reasonable amount of time that work<br />

correctly, are well documented, and are readable.<br />

• Determine whether or not they have written a reasonably efficient<br />

and well-organized program.<br />

• Know which general types of problems are amenable to computer<br />

solution and the various tools necessary for solving such problems.<br />

• Assess the implications of work performed either as an individual<br />

or as a member of a team.<br />

• Understand basic computer architectures.<br />

• Pursue in-depth training in one or more application areas or further<br />

education in computer science.<br />

In addition, students in the B.S. degree program should be able to do<br />

research, be able to convey technical ideas in a clear writing style, and<br />

have the mathematical background necessary for scientific problemsolving.<br />

Students in the B.A. degree program with a concentration in<br />

business should have the knowledge of the functional areas of business<br />

necessary for working in that environment.<br />
