HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION<br />

INTRODUCTION<br />

The curriculum in the Department of Health and Physical Education is<br />

composed of two programs. The physical education activities program<br />

offers a selection of physical skill classes designed to promote health,<br />

physical skill development and to promote lifetime fitness. The minor<br />

programs offer courses that are designed for students who may be involved<br />

in some facet of physical education or coaching as a career path. Coaching<br />

at all levels, health/fitness promotion and sports management are all<br />

potential employment areas.<br />

LEARNING OBJECTIVES<br />

The activities program strives to provide classes for student to gain skill in<br />

activities that carry-over into later life thus providing an avenue for<br />

lifetime fitness. The two minor programs provide knowledge and skill in<br />

teaching and coaching areas which will be beneficial in career choices and/<br />

or leisure pursuits.<br />

ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING OBJECTIVES<br />

• satisfactorily complete all course work requirements<br />

• maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA<br />

• current certification in Community First Aid/CPR.<br />

REQUIRED HOURS FOR THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION MINOR<br />

AND FOR THE COACHING MINOR<br />

There are two minor programs; one in physical education and one in<br />

coaching. The department will guide the student in selecting courses that<br />

best meet the student’s aims and plans. Fifteen (15) semester hours are<br />

required for each minor.<br />

Physical Education minors must take HPED 2251 – Introduction to<br />

Physical Education<br />

Coaching minors must take HPED 3310 Coaching Theory and Methods.<br />

The remaining 12 semester hours for either minor can be selected from the<br />

following courses:<br />

HPED 1154 First Aid: Responding to Emergencies<br />

HPED 2202 Sports Statistics<br />

HPED 2251 Introduction to Physical Education<br />
