THE RELIGION & PHILOSOPHY MAJOR WITH HONORS<br />

Students who maintain a 3.5 grade point average in departmental<br />

courses and who receive “A” grades on their senior theses or projects<br />

may graduate with honors.<br />

THE RELIGION & PHILOSOPHY MINOR<br />

A minor in religion requires completion of 3 courses in addition to the<br />

exploratory religion core requirement: 4 courses in all. At least 2<br />

courses must be at the 3000-level or above.<br />

THE CHURCH LEADERSHIP MINOR<br />

A minor in Church Leadership consists of 4 courses in addition to the<br />

exploratory religion core requirement: 5 courses in all. The minor<br />

includes at least two courses taken at the 3000-level or above in Area I,<br />

II, III, IV, or VI. In addition, the minor includes at least 2 courses taken<br />

in Area V (Church Leadership).<br />

THE PHILOSOPHY MINOR<br />

No major program currently is offered in philosophy. A minor consists<br />

of 4 courses in Area IV, of which at least 2 courses must be taken at the<br />

2000-level or above.<br />

THE CHURCH MUSIC PROGRAM<br />

The church music program is administered through the music department<br />

in cooperation with the Religion and Philosophy department. See the<br />

Music Department section of the catalogue for a program description.<br />

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS (RLGN & PHIL)<br />

Core Exploratory Courses:<br />

Explorations of the Christian Faith<br />

RLGN 1101 Introduction to Christianity. (3) Spring 2008<br />

An introduction to the Christian tradition of faith through a study of its<br />

central symbols, sacred texts, and practices.<br />

RLGN 1102 Jewish Origins in Context. (3) Every term<br />

A study of the Hebrew bible, commonly called by Christians the Old<br />

Testament, in the context of the ancient near eastern world. The course<br />

also will ask students to reflect on the impact of the Hebrew bible on<br />

Western civilization and its implications for the contemporary world.<br />
