• an extensive knowledge of the development of British literature and<br />

American literature from their origins to the present;<br />

• a capacity for interpreting literature, reading critically, and expressing<br />

literary ideas, both in oral discussion and in written work;<br />

• an ability to bring informed critical and analytical judgment to bear<br />

on the study of literary issues, both in oral discussion and in written<br />

work;<br />

• a mastery of the techniques of literary research and the use of MLA<br />

style;<br />

• a knowledge of Standard American English grammar, punctuation,<br />

and syntax;<br />

• a knowledge of Standard American English usage.<br />

ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING OBJECTIVES<br />

Success in achieving the objectives of the English major will be<br />

demonstrated in the following ways:<br />

• completion of each major course with a grade of C or better;<br />

• completion of an entrance and an exit examination;<br />

• satisfactory performance on the senior thesis and its presentation.<br />

Students are required to take the ETS Major Field Achievement Test in<br />

Literature while enrolled in ENGL 2200 and again while enrolled in<br />

ENGL 4495. Scores will be compared to measure progress. Students<br />

preparing for graduate study in English or law are encouraged to take the<br />

GRE or the LSAT.<br />
