MUSI 1109 Beginning Classical Guitar. (1) As needed<br />

Basic techniques of Classical guitar taught in a classroom setting, intended<br />

for non-music majors. The course includes fundamentals of reading music<br />

and understanding elementary music theory. In addition, students will<br />

study examples of simple folk music and music for worship. A selection<br />

of the most useful guitar chords, suitable for beginners, and basic<br />

accompaniment patterns will be taught to allow the students to accompany<br />

their singing. Students will need to own an acoustic guitar and plan for<br />

daily practice time.<br />

MUSI 1110 Literature and Language of Music 1. (1) Fall<br />

This course will acquaint students with the appropriate language needed<br />

for a precise discussion of music and the literature that corresponds to<br />

musical evolution since notation developed. The course will also have a<br />

strong listening component, thereby encouraging more discriminate<br />

listening.<br />

MUSI 1111 Literature and Language of Music 2. (1) Spring<br />

Continuation of MUSI 1110.<br />

MUSI 1112 Music Survey. (3)* As needed<br />

A broad survey of music aimed at developing aesthetic awareness and<br />

critical analysis of music from diverse styles and genres.<br />

MUSI 1113 Ear Training 1. (2) Fall<br />

This course is designed to provide the student with basic sight singing and<br />

listening skills. Some lab time will be devoted to internet music resources<br />

and notation using FINALE. Other topics will include basic MAC<br />

computer skills especially as they pertain to music theory and CAI in<br />

music theory and ear training. Must be taken with MUSI 1101.<br />

Prerequisite: MUSI 1100 or passing score on Theory Placement Exam<br />

MUSI 1114 Ear Training 2. (2) Spring<br />

Continuation of MUSI 1114. Must be taken with MUSI 1102.<br />

Prerequisite: MUSI 1101 and MUSI 1113<br />

MUSI 1211 Composition 1. (1) Spring<br />

Score preparation, performance, and recording of works created by the<br />

student. This is a seminar class; therefore, peer evaluation and<br />

commentary is part of the classroom experience. At least one work must<br />

be offered in the recital given by the composition class at the end of the term.<br />

Prerequisite: MUSI 1101 and MUSI 1113<br />
