INTRODUCTION<br />

THEATRE ARTS<br />

The Department of Theatre Arts offers a pre-professional training<br />

program emphasizing the practical aspects of theatre and the importance<br />

of process. It is the belief of the faculty that the training process must<br />

prepare students for the real world of theatre. Faculty teaching in the<br />

Theatre Arts program are experienced, working professionals. With the<br />

belief that theatre is both an art form and a business, the curriculum<br />

provides a strong undergraduate foundation in theatre performance,<br />

design, production and literature.<br />

Offering a B.A. in Theatre Arts, majors must successfully complete 24<br />

common core hours designed to foster an appreciation for, and an<br />

understanding of each area of theatre. In addition, students must<br />

complete 18 additional track courses in their area of interest:<br />

performance, technical, design or a combination of the three, to<br />

complete the theatre arts degree composed of a total of 42 major hours.<br />

LEARNING OBJECTIVES<br />

The following objectives are established as a basis for the training<br />

program in Theatre Arts. Upon application for graduation, the Theatre<br />

Arts major will be expected to:<br />

• understand the basic theoretical concepts behind each of the four<br />

major areas within the discipline: performance, design, production and<br />

literature;<br />

• have an extensive artistic vocabulary in their specific area of<br />

concentration;<br />

• have the technical knowledge pertaining, but not limited to the<br />

student’s chosen area of concentration;<br />

• demonstrate an understanding of auditioning and/or portfolio<br />

presentation;<br />

• be knowledgeable of viable avenues of employment and sources<br />

noting such information;<br />

• have an understanding of opportunities for graduate studies and<br />

employment in theatre and the performing arts.<br />
