GENERAL INSPECTION PROCEDURES <strong>HANDBOOK</strong> CHAPTER 3<br />

Documentation Required: The location of each diesel fuel storage area(s) inspected<br />

should be recorded in the inspection notes.<br />

7. Fire Protection. All specialty or st<strong>and</strong>alone firefighting equipment in use or<br />

available for use outby the working section shall be inspected for compliance<br />

with approved programs, approved plans, <strong>and</strong> applicable st<strong>and</strong>ards (e.g.,<br />

portable water cars, portable chemical cars, portable foam-generating<br />

machines, additional firefighting materials for conveyor belt flights exceeding<br />

2,000 feet in length, <strong>and</strong> emergency materials within 2 miles of each working<br />

section). A fire extinguisher with a 2-A:10-B:C designation that contains<br />

approximately 4.25 pounds of dry powder meets the intent of the st<strong>and</strong>ard <strong>and</strong><br />

provides an acceptable level of protection. Also refer to the National Fire<br />

Protection Association ® (NFPA) Nos. NFPA 11A 1970 - High Expansion Foam<br />

Systems, NFPA 13 1969 - Installation of Sprinkler Systems, NFPA 13A 1971 -<br />

Care <strong>and</strong> Maintenance of Sprinkler Systems, NFPA 15 1969 - Water Spray<br />

Fixed Systems for Fire Protection, NFPA 17 1969 - Dry Chemical Extinguishing<br />

Systems, NFPA 72A 1967 - Local Protective Signaling Systems or NFPA 198<br />

1969 - Care, Maintenance <strong>and</strong> Use of Fire Hose.<br />

Documentation Required: Inspection of specialty or st<strong>and</strong>alone fire protection<br />

equipment should be documented in the inspection notes to show the location <strong>and</strong> type<br />

of fire protection provided. For purpose of documentation, for all h<strong>and</strong>held portable<br />

fire extinguishers associated with protection for a designated piece of equipment or a<br />

designated location shall be considered inspected with that piece of equipment or<br />

designated location <strong>and</strong> does not require separate documentation.<br />

8. Haulage or Mobile Equipment. The inspector shall review the operator<br />

examination records <strong>and</strong> inspect each piece of in use <strong>and</strong> available for use<br />

haulage, mobile, <strong>and</strong> portable equipment to determine if hazardous or<br />

potentially hazardous conditions exist, with attention to braking mechanisms,<br />

batteries, audible warning devices, reflective devices, lights, tires, safe access,<br />

guards, equipment condition, fire suppression systems, combustible materials,<br />

fire protection, condition of trailing or inter-machine electrical cables, cable<br />

conduit, safety devices, <strong>and</strong> compliance with applicable st<strong>and</strong>ards. The<br />
