What are project management tools<br />

in Volume 1?<br />

The 'Project Management Tools' in Volume1 are a few of the<br />

many tools designed to provide guidance for managing and<br />

achieving a successful <strong>transport</strong> <strong>decision</strong>-<strong>making</strong> process.<br />

The four broad phases involved in implementing project<br />

management are summarised on this page. These phases are<br />

outlined in detail in Section 2 of Volume 1. In summary these<br />

are:<br />

(A) Scoping: is the initial stage of planning a project,<br />

where the whole <strong>decision</strong>-<strong>making</strong> process is mapped out by<br />

the project manager and the <strong>decision</strong>-<strong>making</strong> authority/<br />

organisation;<br />

(B) Establish core team: is the identification of<br />

suitable individuals to form a project management team, that<br />

agree the <strong>decision</strong>-<strong>making</strong> process, the procedures to be<br />

utilised and the resources required;<br />

(C) Detailed preparation: is the phase where<br />

detailed consideration is given to preparing specific plans/<br />

strategies and understanding potential risks and barriers; and<br />

(D) Running the project: is the active phase of<br />

management within the running of the project.<br />
