GOAL: The goal <strong>of</strong> this project is to facilitate management research <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong>’s coastal<br />

environment through improved data collection systems, enhanced research infrastructure, and<br />

upgrades <strong>of</strong> research tools.<br />

OBJECTIVE: The objective <strong>of</strong> this project is to upgrade the Claude Peteet Mariculture Center in<br />

Gulf Shores, <strong>Alabama</strong> through the renovation <strong>of</strong> the laboratory and farm facilities,<br />

drainage upgrades, construction <strong>of</strong> a boat basin on the Intercoastal Canal, and repair<br />

<strong>of</strong> the salt water pipeline from the Gulf <strong>State</strong> Park Pier.<br />

The Marine Resources Division (MRD) <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Alabama</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Conservation and Natural<br />

Resources owns and manages the Claude Peteet Mariculture Center (CPMC) in Gulf Shores, <strong>Alabama</strong><br />

(30˚ 17’ 1.97” N 87˚ 39’ 53.39” W). This facility features 35 one quarter-acre lined ponds, a wet<br />

laboratory, and greenhouses with recirculating culture systems. In addition, there are a wood-framed<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice building and license sales facility house which provide <strong>of</strong>fices to approximately 25 employees <strong>of</strong><br />

MRD, including administrative staff, biological staff, and enforcement <strong>of</strong>ficers. The CPMC property<br />

fronts the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, and draws much <strong>of</strong> the water used for culture activities at the<br />

station from the waterway and Gulf <strong>of</strong> Mexico.<br />
