GOAL: The goal of this initiative is to enhance public access conditions in the coastal area of Baldwin
County.
OBJECTIVE: The objective includes projects such as installing boat ramps, constructing fishing piers
and boardwalks, creating camping facilities, and general improvement.
The goal of this initiative is to enhance public access conditions in the coastal area of Baldwin County.
Baldwin County owns parks and undeveloped parcels of land throughout the County. The population of
Baldwin County has grown over 50 percent since the 1990 census. The use of current public facilities is
high due to this fact and many of Baldwin County’s parks need enhancement to provide beneficial use for
citizens.
The objective includes projects such as installing boat ramps, constructing fishing piers and boardwalks,
creating camping facilities, and general improvement. This initiative will focus strictly on properties that
are currently under the ownership of Baldwin County.
The primary focus of this initiative is property known as the Hastie Lake Tract (Please see Appendix G-25
for a map of this site). This is a 367 acre property in northern Baldwin County that was purchased using
CIAP funds in the previous program. The site includes approximately 170 acres of wetlands. The project
area for this initiative is focused on the southern portion of this parcel. Initial plans for this area include
the construction of a boat launch facility, a parking area, and paving of the roadway leading to the launch.
Additional plans include a boardwalk to the wetlands area, a primitive camping area and the placement of
educational signs and kiosks throughout the site. This site provides a wealth of opportunity to educate the
public on the importance of wetlands and their function. It also provides education on the birds, reptiles,
and fish that make this area their home. The boat launch will provide a connection to the Mobile-Tensaw
Delta that is habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. The County hopes to coordinate with the Alabama
Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to place this launch site on the Bartram Canoe Trail.
The State is planning an extension of the current trail. This site would provide ideal access to many of the
designated canoe and kayak trails. The primitive camping area could also serve as an over-night stop on
the trail. The preliminary plans are for a launch area that would allow three vehicles to launch at once.
Parking will be provided for approximately 75 vehicles. There is an existing dirt road leading into the site.
This roadway will be widened to two lanes and paved. The approach leading into State Highway 225 will
also be changed to provide better site distance for ingress and egress.
