locations <strong>of</strong> the existing funded monitors.<br />

AUTHORIZED USES<br />

o This project meets the criteria set forth in Authorized Use #1, projects and activities for the<br />

conservation, protection, or restoration <strong>of</strong> coastal areas, including wetland.<br />

o Justification: This project meets Authorized Use #1 because it will obtain data necessary for<br />

scientific research and investigation <strong>of</strong> coastal areas. These data are necessary in conserving,<br />

protecting, and restoring complex coastal ecosystems<br />

o Cost Sharing: Cost sharing is not applicable to this project.<br />

o Partnering: This project will utilize 100% <strong>CIAP</strong> funding. The <strong>State</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Alabama</strong>, Baldwin County,<br />

and Mobile County (AL-21, BC-9, and MC-9) will partner to create an east-west transect <strong>of</strong><br />

continuous and real-time weather and water quality recording stations along southern coastal<br />

<strong>Alabama</strong>.<br />

This project contains many partners in addition to <strong>CIAP</strong>. Specifically, the Dauphin Island Sea Lab,<br />

Mobile Bay National Estuary <strong>Program</strong>, University <strong>of</strong> South <strong>Alabama</strong>, Weeks Bay National<br />

Estuarine Research Reserve, the <strong>Alabama</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Conservation, <strong>State</strong> Land Division,<br />

<strong>Coastal</strong> <strong>Program</strong>, EPA’s Gulf <strong>of</strong> Mexico <strong>Program</strong> and the <strong>Alabama</strong> Lighthouse Association have<br />

all contributed to the implementation <strong>of</strong> these systems in coastal waters. Additional funding from<br />

the Emergency Disaster Response Fund (EDRF) is being utilized to purchase and maintain<br />

monitors in the Mississippi Sound, near the western boundary <strong>of</strong> Mobile County.<br />
