GOAL: The goal <strong>of</strong> this project is to enhance or restore sensitive habitats on county-owned property.<br />

OBJECTIVE: The objective <strong>of</strong> the project is to undertake actions that will enhance and/or restore<br />

stream corridors and other sensitive habitats including the removal <strong>of</strong> invasive exotic<br />

species on county-owned property.<br />

The Mobile County Commission owns a number <strong>of</strong> properties containing sensitive habitats that would<br />

benefit from restoration and enhanced management. The goal <strong>of</strong> this project is to enhance or restore<br />

sensitive habitats on county-owned property. The objective <strong>of</strong> the project is to undertake actions that will<br />

enhance and/or restore stream corridors and other sensitive habitats including the removal <strong>of</strong> invasive<br />

exotic species on county-owned property. The Mobile County Environmental Services Department will<br />

identify and prioritize sensitive habitats on county owned property for restoration or enhancement (50 -<br />

300 acres). Staff will attend training and educational forums on stream restoration, wetland mitigation,<br />

floodplain management, natural disaster mitigation, preparedness and recovery, and other appropriate<br />

topics. Once identified, the restoration/enhancements projects will be designed to meet current best<br />

management practices, standards and regulations. The County Commission will seek reimbursement for<br />

travel and training costs incurred before the plan is approved for staff assigned to this project. This<br />

project will also include acquisition <strong>of</strong> equipment needed to implement and maintain the projects. The<br />

equipment to be purchased will be 50 hp, or larger, tractor with attachments, low ground pressure loader<br />

with attachments, dozier, small equipment, herbicide, limestone, seed, and native vegetation. A<br />

greenhouse, consulting services, and tree planting services will also be required.<br />

AUTHORIZED USES<br />

o This project meets the criteria set forth in Authorized Use #1, projects and activities for the<br />

conservation, protection, or restoration <strong>of</strong> coastal areas, including wetlands.<br />

o Justification: This project is consistent with Authorized Use #1 as it will restore and enhance<br />

wetlands on County owned parcels.<br />

o Cost Sharing: Cost sharing is not applicable to this project.<br />

o Partnering: There will be no partnering with this project.<br />

o Benefit to the Natural <strong>Coastal</strong> Environment: With the enhancement and/or restoration <strong>of</strong><br />

sensitive habitats Mobile County will provide the much needed conservation, protection, and<br />

management <strong>of</strong> our coastal natural resources.<br />
