GOAL: The goal <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Coastal</strong> Research Weather Stations project is to enhance computer enabled<br />

environmental education activities for Mobile County students.<br />

OBJECTIVE: The objective <strong>of</strong> the project is to establish weather stations throughout Mobile County\<br />

that are accessible by local schools.<br />

The University <strong>of</strong> South <strong>Alabama</strong> Mesonet program combines weather data collection for the National<br />

Weather Service and the University <strong>of</strong> South <strong>Alabama</strong> (USA) Weather Center with a program that makes<br />

the data collected available on the internet for students and teachers. The program also includes experts<br />

from USA providing local teachers with training on the importance and use <strong>of</strong> weather data in the<br />

classroom. The goal <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Coastal</strong> Research Weather Stations project is to enhance computer enabled<br />

environmental education activities for Mobile County students. The objective <strong>of</strong> the project is to establish<br />

weather stations throughout Mobile County that are accessible by local schools.<br />

The project will include installation <strong>of</strong> at least six weather stations that contain wind monitors, barometers,<br />

temperature/humidity sensors, rain gauges, and soil moisture probes and that are connected to the<br />

internet.<br />

AUTHORIZED USES<br />

o This project meets the criteria set forth in Authorized Use #4, implementation <strong>of</strong> a federally<br />

approved marine, coastal, or comprehensive conservation management plan.<br />

o Justification: The project is consistent with Authorized Use #4 as it implements Action EPI-A1:<br />

Enhance Public Education and Outreach included in the Mobile Bay National Estuary <strong>Program</strong><br />

Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan.<br />

o Cost Sharing: Cost sharing is not applicable to this project.<br />

o Partnering: There will be no partnering with this project.<br />

o Benefit to the Natural <strong>Coastal</strong> Environment: By creating a real time data retrieval system,<br />

students, teachers, weather stations, and monitors are able to access the data collected and report<br />

all changes in wind, barometric pressure, temperature/humidity, water quality, salinity, and soil<br />
