GOAL: The goal <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Alabama</strong> <strong>CIAP</strong> is to conserve, and restore natural coastal habitat and wildlife<br />

through data analysis, research, and on-the-ground conservation activities.<br />

OBJECTIVE: The objective <strong>of</strong> this project is to implement prescribed fire in designated protected<br />

areas <strong>of</strong> coastal <strong>Alabama</strong>. Also, this project will relocate 150 gopher tortoises to the<br />

Perdido River Corridor, 40 gopher tortoises to Gulf <strong>State</strong> Park, 30 gopher tortoises to<br />

the Lillian Swamp, and fund the construction and installation <strong>of</strong> 50 bat houses and<br />

500 warbler houses in various protected areas throughout coastal <strong>Alabama</strong>.<br />

This project will investigate and restore wildlife communities throughout designated protected areas in<br />

coastal <strong>Alabama</strong>. In order to create the conditions suitable for healthy population <strong>of</strong> flora and fauna,<br />

SLD conservation staff will implement prescribed fire techniques on at least 3,000 acres annually. Tracts<br />

targeted for burning will be identified by SLD conservation staff as part <strong>of</strong> the grant application. The<br />

prescribed fire will take place at the Grand Bay Savanna, Perdido River Corridor, and Splinter Hill Bog.<br />

In addition to prescribed fire, select populations <strong>of</strong> animals species will be restored in suitable locations<br />

throughout designated protected areas in coastal <strong>Alabama</strong>. Vulnerable gopher tortoise (Gopherus<br />

polyphemus) populations will be relocated, specifically to the Lillian Swamp and the Perdido River<br />

Corridor. The objective <strong>of</strong> this project is to relocate 150 gopher tortoises to the Perdido River Corridor,<br />

40 gopher tortoises to Gulf <strong>State</strong> Park, and 30 tortoises to the Lillian Swamp. Other species habitat<br />

enhancement projects will be implemented including the construction and installation <strong>of</strong> bat boxes and<br />

bird houses for warblers (Parulidae). Specifically, 50 bat boxes will be constructed and installed in the<br />

Mobile-Tensaw Delta and 500 birdhouses for warblers (Parulidae) will be strategically placed at the Grand<br />

Bay Savanna, Mobile-Tensaw Delta, and the Lillian Swamp. Costs associated with this project include<br />

labor and materials.<br />

AUTHORIZED USES<br />

o This project meets the criteria set forth in Authorized Use #2: mitigation <strong>of</strong> damage to fish,<br />

wildlife, or natural resources.<br />

o Justification: This project will restore plant and wildlife communities.<br />

o Cost Sharing: Cost sharing is not applicable to this project.<br />

o Partnering: This project will utilize 100% <strong>of</strong> <strong>CIAP</strong> funding.<br />
