SPENDING ESTIMATE PER CALENDAR YEAR OF PROJECT DURATION: MC-15 2008 $ 1,000,000.00 2009 $ 1,000,000.00 2010 $ - 2011 $ - GOAL: The goal of this project is to provide public access and education toward the protection of the natural resources encompassing the Big Creek Lake watershed. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this project is to improve public access and increase awareness of the natural resource issues in the Big Creek watershed and promote understanding and participation in conservation and stewardship activities. More than 250,000 residents of Mobile County depend on Big Creek Lake as their primary source for safe and clean drinking water. It is the consensus of local community and economic leaders that the West Mobile County area around the watershed will be confronting increased development pressures and economic growth over the next decade. The goal of this project is to provide public access and education toward the protection of the natural resources encompassing the Big Creek Lake watershed. The objective of this project is to improve public access and increase awareness of the natural resource issues in the Big Creek watershed and promote understanding and participation in conservation and stewardship activities. This project may include the construction of piers on both sides of the boat launch area, construction of restroom and educational facilities, expansion of the parking areas, an elevated boardwalk along the waterfront with educational kiosks, picnic areas, and security infrastructure. Appendix G-34 includes a map of Big Creek Lake Public Access. AUTHORIZED USES o This project meets the criteria set forth in Authorized Use #4, implementation of a federally approved marine, coastal, or comprehensive conservation management plan. o Justification: This project is consistent with Authorized Use #4 as it implements Action HU-C1: Increase Public Access included in the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan. o Cost Sharing: Cost sharing is not applicable to this project. Providing the public a place to experience natural resource conservation, protection, and management enhances their appreciation of the natural coastal environment. As a result, this appreciation reinforces a sense of ownership providing benefit to the natural coastal environment.
