GOAL:<br />

The goal <strong>of</strong> this project is to provide public access and education toward the protection <strong>of</strong> the<br />

natural resources encompassing the Big Creek Lake watershed.<br />

OBJECTIVE: The objective <strong>of</strong> this project is to improve public access and increase awareness <strong>of</strong> the<br />

natural resource issues in the Big Creek watershed and promote understanding and<br />

participation in conservation and stewardship activities.<br />

More than 250,000 residents <strong>of</strong> Mobile County depend on Big Creek Lake as their primary source for safe<br />

and clean drinking water. It is the consensus <strong>of</strong> local community and economic leaders that the West<br />

Mobile County area around the watershed will be confronting increased development pressures and<br />

economic growth over the next decade.<br />

The goal <strong>of</strong> this project is to provide public access and education toward the protection <strong>of</strong> the natural<br />

resources encompassing the Big Creek Lake watershed.<br />

The objective <strong>of</strong> this project is to improve public access and increase awareness <strong>of</strong> the natural resource<br />

issues in the Big Creek watershed and promote understanding and participation in conservation and<br />

stewardship activities.<br />

This project may include the construction <strong>of</strong> piers on both sides <strong>of</strong> the boat launch area, construction <strong>of</strong><br />

restroom and educational facilities, expansion <strong>of</strong> the parking areas, an elevated boardwalk along the<br />

waterfront with educational kiosks, picnic areas, and security infrastructure. Appendix G-34 includes a<br />

map <strong>of</strong> Big Creek Lake Public Access.<br />

AUTHORIZED USES<br />

o This project meets the criteria set forth in Authorized Use #4, implementation <strong>of</strong> a federally<br />

approved marine, coastal, or comprehensive conservation management plan.<br />

o Justification: This project is consistent with Authorized Use #4 as it implements Action HU-C1:<br />

Increase Public Access included in the Mobile Bay National Estuary <strong>Program</strong> Comprehensive<br />

Conservation and Management Plan.<br />
