Food Service Department Updates<br />

Effective for the 2010-<strong>2011</strong> school year, the Food Service program continued to offer universal breakfast to all<br />

students in the district. For <strong>2011</strong>-<strong>2012</strong>, the department will continue to offer the universal breakfast program.<br />

Students at all grade levels will be allowed to eat breakfast free of charge regardless of their eligibility. The<br />

department collects free and reduced applications each year to determine student eligibility for meals served.<br />

Funding for the Food and Child Nutrition Services department is based on actual meals served to students<br />

eligible for free, reduced, and paid meals based on approved applications.<br />

The Food Service department has recognized a $1.9M profit in 2010-<strong>2011</strong>, and plans on recognizing a profit in<br />

<strong>2011</strong>-<strong>2012</strong>. The Food Service program continues to monitor labor by focusing on campus needs and ensuring<br />

that schools maintained their meals per labor hour. The department also continues to observe the labor needs at<br />

the central office and warehouse.<br />

REVENUE SOURCES FOR <strong>2011</strong>-<strong>2012</strong><br />

Approximately 87.11% of program revenue in the food and child nutrition fund is generated from USDA as<br />

reimbursements for meals served under the National <strong>School</strong> Lunch Program, <strong>School</strong> Breakfast Program, After<br />

<strong>School</strong> Snack Program, Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant, and CACFP Head Start p.m. snacks. The USDA<br />

Commodity Food Distribution Program provides another 5.27% of the program revenues for total federal<br />

support of 92.38%. The total percentage of revenue from federal sources has increased as revenues from local<br />

sources have decreased. Local sources generated primarily from user fees, such as a la carte sales, catering<br />

services and paid student lunches provides 6.24% of operating revenues. <strong>District</strong> reimbursements for the<br />

reduced lunches is 0.83%.<br />
