(The Pilgrims entered a strange new land and needed help<br />

from the native people to survive there.)<br />

2. Literal What is the legend of Plymouth Rock? (traditional story<br />

told about the Pilgrims’ first landing in the New World, on a<br />

rock near shore)<br />

3. Evaluative If you were one of the Pilgrims and had to choose<br />

a good place to start a colony, what would you look for?<br />

(Answers may vary.)<br />

4. Inferential How did the Pilgrims feel when they first saw<br />

Samoset come out of the forest? (fascinated, afraid) Why? (He<br />

looked different from them, and they were not sure if he was a<br />

friend or an enemy.)<br />

5. Literal To which tribe of Native Americans did Squanto<br />

and Chief Massasoit belong? (Wampanoag) Where did<br />

the Wampanoag live? [Show image 8A-1 if necessary.] (in<br />

Massachusetts near the Plymouth Colony)<br />

6. Why was Squanto able to talk to the Pilgrims in their own<br />

English language? (He had been forced to go to Spain, but<br />

then got to England, where he learned the English language.<br />

He then returned to Massachusetts.)<br />
