Word Work: Celebration<br />
5 minutes<br />
1. In the read-aloud you heard, “The Pilgrims held a three-day<br />
harvest celebration.”<br />
2. Say the word celebration with me.<br />
3. Celebration is another word for party, especially one to mark a<br />
special date.<br />
4. My school had a celebration at the end of the school year.<br />
5. <strong>Tell</strong> me about a celebration that you have had. Use the word<br />
celebration when you tell about it. [Ask two or three students.<br />
If necessary, guide and/or rephrase the students’ responses:<br />
“One celebration I attended was . . . ”]<br />
6. What’s the word we’ve been talking about?<br />
Use a Making Choices activity for follow-up. Directions: I am going<br />
to read some sentences. If the sentence describes a celebration,<br />
say, “That is a celebration.” If not, say, “That is not a celebration.”<br />
1. Mom took my sister and me to the dentist. (That is not a<br />
celebration.)<br />
2. We waved flags and watched fireworks on the Fourth of July.<br />
(That is a celebration.)<br />
3. My parents went out for dinner on their wedding anniversary.<br />
(That is a celebration.)<br />
4. Carlos swam across the pool with his friends. (That is not a<br />
celebration.)<br />
5. Penny invited friends to eat cake with her on her birthday.<br />
