Analyses<br />

Participants were required <strong>to</strong> give their written consent <strong>to</strong> take part<br />

and <strong>to</strong> complete a series of quantitative assessments one-week prior<br />

<strong>to</strong> beginning the program. One-week after completing the program,<br />

participants were required <strong>to</strong> complete a post-course assessment.<br />

There was no control group in this study.<br />

The assessments used were the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale<br />

(DASS 21), The Life Orientation Test – Revised (Lot – R, Sheirer,<br />

Carver & Bridges), Resilience Scale (RS), World Health Organisation<br />

Quality of Life (WHOQOL-Bref), Kentucky Inven<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>Mindfulness</strong><br />

Scale (Kims, Baer) and the Cognitive and Affective <strong>Mindfulness</strong> Scale<br />

(CAMS-R, Feldman).<br />

Of the 15 participants who began the program, nine completed it.<br />

However, the current data analyses include only the participants who<br />

completed both the pre- and post-course assessments. The final<br />

sample size was seven participants, this sample size is <strong>to</strong>o small <strong>to</strong><br />

have statistical power therefore results cannot be generalised.<br />

Participants<br />

Fifteen participants entered the MBRP program, six were male and<br />

nine were female ranging in age from 28 – 48 years (M = 33.8, SD =<br />

5.95). All of the participants had a his<strong>to</strong>ry of multiple addictions,<br />

length of use ranged from 6 – 24 years (M = 15.5, SD = 5.95). Two<br />

of the participants’ addictions were limited <strong>to</strong> alcohol and<br />

prescription medication, eight had a his<strong>to</strong>ry of abusing multiple Class<br />

A drugs such as speed, ecstasy, heroin and crack cocaine. Data<br />

regarding the his<strong>to</strong>ry of drug use was missing for 3 participants.<br />

Three participants had spent time in prison. None of the participants<br />

were using illicit drugs or alcohol at the onset of the program. One<br />

participant reported taking prescribed anti-depressants at the onset.<br />

All of the participants were currently working through the 12 step<br />

program, and they were all receiving support from a sponsor, a key<br />
