The Stopfordian 2011–2012
UNDER 12 HOCKEY
I would like to start off by saying a huge “Thank you” to Miss
Withington, who has been an amazing inspiration and coach;
we have learnt skills and valuable teamwork which led to a
very successful season for the U12 Hockey squad. I would
also loke to thank Nigel Stanhope, Mrs Jones and Lara Acott
for additional training skills.
We have played numerous schools and celebrated several
wins. In November we first played against Queen’s Chester
and made a great start to the season with our A team winning
4-0 and our B team drawing 0-0.
After that we travelled to Arnold where the A team drew 1-1.
At St. Bede’s the A team once again won 4-0 with the B team
drawing 1-1. On the 26 th November we played against
Rishworth. We had outstanding results: the A team won 6-1
and our B team won 7-0. Kirkham Grammar was a tough
opponent with both teams either losing or drawing.
As the year went on we grew a stronger bond as well as a
strong defensive and attacking system, thanks to the after
school and lunchtime clubs.

Even though we have lost some matches, they have never

FOOTBALL
The fixture list has grown stronger in the last few years and the
1st XI paid the price this season with our first ever losing
season. It was still a hugely enjoyable season with a really
dedicated group of players. A youthful 2nd XI enjoyed some
excellent results, whilst the Under 14s produced the first
unbeaten season by a Stockport Grammar XI. A 0-0 draw
with Wilmslow being the only ‘blemish’ on a perfect set of
results. The Under 12s also enjoyed some success, winning
the Plate at the Manchester Grammar 8-a-side tournament.
A big thanks to all our hard working managers – Mr Young, Mr
Makinson, Mr Heyes, Mr Masters and Mr Lorentz. The
prestigious SGS Manager of the Year Award went to Mr Wilson
for his sterling effort with the U14s and a mention in
dispatches for Dr Airey with his roving role of coach to any
side in need of a safe pair in hands.

1ST XI FOOTBALL
Our season opened with a disappointing trip to King’s
Chester. Despite taking the lead through a Mark Goodstadt
penalty, we came up against a very strong side and ended up
losing 7-2. We had lost many players from the previous year’s
team, so for many new members of the 1st XI this was a harsh
introduction. With a tough fixture list to come, we had to
move on quickly and make sure a result like this would not
happen again.
We travelled to Altrincham the week after and put in a very
spirited performance. A goal poacher’s finish from Ed Appleby
brought the scores level in the second half but, as we pushed
for a winner, we were caught out and conceded a soft penalty
late on. Despite hitting the bar in the last minute, we ended up
losing 2-1; however, it was a clear improvement on the week
before and the team looked more resolute and organised.
We recorded our first victory away at St Bede’s. We were
now taking our work from training onto the pitch, and our

fitness levels were improving. An early goal from Oliver Hall
