The Stopfordian 2011–2012
As Sarah Hindle, House Captain said, her favourite event is
‘Sports Day, because it is the one event of the year where
everyone can get involved and have fun. Everyone always
enjoys themselves!’ This year was no exception. Seniors
came second in their Sports Day overall and the camaraderie
and light-hearted competitive spirit was there in all those
taking part. It was also quite an emotional day, as for so many,
this was their last House sporting event.
Victory was Vernon’s in the Senior Hockey and the top score was
then followed up by a win from the Inter Hockey event too and
the Juniors came a very respectable and comfortable second.
Come May, the hotly anticipated Vernon Show of summer
2012 showcased a range of talent from all age groups in all
Houses. There were a range of musical and comic talents and
a strong presence from the Lower School this year, including
a unique comedy act from Arisha-Jane Marsh, original music
from Lara O’Donohue, a duet from Georgia Burns and Molly
Royle, as well as a star turn from ‘Those Fours Girls’, a singing
and dancing girl group from 1S.
Our fabulous House Captains were fine examples of taking
part, having a go and smiling through both successes and
failures. They encouraged the younger members of the
House, performed some very memorable assemblies; I don’t
think anyone will forget the group of Sixth Formers following
Dan Fazelynia in standing on chairs to ‘do the macarena’!
Finally, we are very lucky in our never-ending support from
the Vernon House staff and special thanks must go to Mr
Thorley for his dedication, particularly his superb assembly on
his memories of the Vernon Show and, this year, for his
inspired contribution to the show itself and for persuading the
rest of the ‘band’ to join in. Thanks also to Mr. Young, Mr.
Lorentz, Mrs. Vernon and Mrs Fenton. A very special extra
thanks must go to, again, Mr. Thorley, Mr. Masters, Mr. Russell,
Mr. Ehegartner and Mr. Hanson for all being truly ‘Beautiful’.

Vernon House stalwart, Ismaeel Ramzan contributed an
entertaining act with his regular ‘crew’and Ed Robinson
stepped in too, as well as his own stellar performance with
Jamie Simpson, which had everyone ‘hippity-hopping’ back
to period 4 after the show! Ade Ferguson and Natalie Clarke
played an extremely well-received acoustic set and the special
guests of the show, ‘One Education’ provoked a lively amount
of audience participation. Special thanks must go to Chris
Holleworth, Alexander Longson and their team for organising
the sound and thanks also to Adam Griffiths for doing the
lighting. The two shows, despite depleted audiences due to
study leave, raised £334.00 for the House charities.
Summer Term firmly in place, we achieved first place in the
First to Fourth Year Rounders events and were heading
towards Sports Day. The Sports Day events are great.
Everyone takes part, be it through competing or supporting
and this year was no exception. Despite a very dodgy
summer of bad weather, both the Sports Days did go ahead
without being rained off.
