The Stopfordian 2011–2012 CityUNITED The Autumn Term saw the production of CityUNITED, a brand new, never before seen play written by our very own Mr Howson. CityUNITED took us through the romantic story of a world ruled by football, where an oppressive referee, played by Sam Arrowsmith, makes the choices not only where the game is concerned, but in the lives of everyone in the community. Set twenty years into the future, the world is crumbling and the people are torn apart by their home teams-City and United. Amongst the turmoil and chaos on the streets, two lovers from opposite sides: Jack, played by Cyrus Bulsara, and Wendy, played by Liza Vul, are desperately searching for a way to escape the referee’s grasp. Accompanying them in their escape plan are an elderly couple, played by Jonny Collins and Leah Allcock, who are willing to risk everything for freedom. The play culminates in a final game of football which will decide their fates. Add in a few references to Shakespeare, some Bruce Springsteen, and a little wit and sarcasm, and you have a play about the tribal nature of football and the right to freedom. Mr Howson, who was also director, rehearsed tirelessly with an enthusiastic cast to show the play for two nights, in which it was a huge success and left the audience with a compelling thought of what the world would be like if it were ruled by football. We would like to thank Mr Howson for putting on such a fantastic show, which we thoroughly enjoyed being part of! Liza Vul and Elizabeth Worthington (5K) CLASSICS PLAY: THE PERSIANS and entertaining dramatic performance that also presents its audiences with difficult questions about themselves and modern society. This year’s production of The Persians was no different. Through this ancient play with its complex language and alien style, we were forced to confront the very real, very topical issue of animosity between east and west and to ask ourselves, over 2000 years later, why we have not learned from the past. For the ancient Greeks going to the theatre wasn’t just about being entertained. Playwrights felt a responsibility to educate their audience and they created dramas which compelled their audience to question aspects of their society and which tried to provoke discussion on the human condition. Mr Thorley’s productions of Greek tragedy continue this tradition: last year’s production of Trojan Women brought home the realities, not only of the Holocaust, but of the displacement of women and children in any war, and Antigone in the previous year inspired its audiences with individuals who had put their lives on the line to stand up for their beliefs. Amy Wood’s chilling performance of a monologue, “Left Behind”, written by Maddie Hardy, forced the audience to consider how we can ever know who is on the side of ‘right’ in war and to look upon the individuals, the innocents who are often left to suffer most. Naomi Clarke’s cold and distant soldier, acting ‘under orders’, really drove home the emotional and physical suffering of the woman left behind by the young male ‘heroes’.
