The 2011-2012 school year started with fresh energy and
enthusiasm, and offered a new responsibility and leadership
opportunity to the House system in the form of Charity
Representatives. The rationale behind this is to empower the
pupils and allow them to take responsibility for the four
charities nominated by the school community; Diabetes UK,
EducAid, Christies and CALLM. It is intended that between
the Houses, various events and fund-raising activities will take
place in order to raise money for these charities. The charities
are a mixture of local, national and international organisations
and have a particular significance to several pupils and staff
who have been supported by or had a personal experience
connected to them. Emma Trimmingham and Elizabeth
Healey were welcomed into the role this year alongside our
new House Captains, Holly Allcock, Millie Ralston, Sophie
Skelton and Chris Spencer.
The House Captains took their role very seriously and coordinated
some excellent assemblies to welcome, motivate
and raise awareness of what the House system has to offer.
The main emphasis was on participation and encouraging all
pupils to try something new, which at times perhaps took
them out of their comfort zone.
The first two events of the academic year were Senior Netball
followed by Senior Rugby. Senior Netball raised the standard
in terms of team spirit within the Nicholson House. Sporting
fashionable red tights to highlight their proud identity, and
screaming at the top of their lungs, we knew we were in for
another good year. Upon completion of these events,
Nicholson had made a strong start and were joint first in the
battle to win the Fallows’ Shield. We were also solid
competitors in the Inter Basketball. Luke Harvey Jones took
on the role as team captain for the Basketball team and did a
splendid job in leading the team. They were victorious in all
three matches and gained the maximum 10 points that were
on offer. This set the tone for the younger members of house
and was a real inspiration. Well done!
Second place in Chess managed to gain further points to
maintain our lead in the race for the Fallows’ Shield. Jack
Nicholson, the House mascot, made several appearances and
alongside other keen supporters, there was much excitement
and fun to be had by all. Mr Cheslett and Mr Hamilton very
kindly co-ordinated and umpired the chess matches again this
year with an expert eye always nearby watching and checking
play. We thank them for their time and skill given in this
event.
The Autumn Term was rounded off with the First Year House
party which was expertly co-ordinated by Mrs Wilkinson and
Mr Hanson of Warren House. The First Year quiz with Quiz
Master Mr Corbett was the most exciting First Year quiz I have
ever experienced with some brilliant visuals and VERY
