The Stopfordian 2011–2012
CHRISTMAS CONCERT
In December, the Christmas Concert heralded the festive
season with a wide variety of music. Concert Band opened
the concert with a lively set of pieces, ranging from The Final
Countdown to a Christmas version of the James Bond theme.
This was followed by a small vocal ensemble performing the
well-known Carol of the Bells. Senior Big Band contrasted this
with numbers such as Bradley’s Groove Shop and Jordu. To
finish the first half, the Wind Orchestra performed three
pieces, sticking to tradition by ending with a rousing rendition
of Sleigh Ride.
Chorus began the second half with a less customary item, a
medley of songs from the musical Miss Saigon. This featured
solos by Charlotte Yandell, Tasmin Ray and Ollie Mills. Junior
Big Band provided another spot of light relief and brought us
the usual Christmas feeling, playing a big band version of
Santa Claus is Coming to Town. Chamber Choir ended the
evening with a reflective interpretation of The Christmas Song
before wishing everyone a merry Christmas. We would like to
thank all the teachers involved as it was a thoroughly
enjoyable evening. As our last Christmas concert, this
certainly provided a night to remember.

The 25th February 2012, saw a return to the Royal Northern
College of Music where both Chorus and Chamber Choir
performed alongside the Chorale and the Cheshire Sinfonia.
The concert opened with the Chamber Choir and Chorale
singing The King Shall Rejoice by Handel, conducted by the
Chorale’s conductor, Peter Stallworthy. The orchestra then
gave a lovely performance of Mozart’s Symphony no. 38.
After the interval, Chorus, again with the Chorale, gave an
impressive performance of the Nelson Mass by Haydn,
conducted by Mr. Dow. This was a tremendous experience
for us to be involved in such a large scale choral work.
GALA CONCERT AT THE RNCM
The concert showed not only the sheer number of pupils who
take an interest in singing at SGS, but the high quality to which
they strive to achieve. It was enjoyed by all who attended and
will hopefully lead to future successes at the RNCM.
