It has been a roller coaster of a year for Vernon. Point scores
have been high and low, victories have been won and lost, but
throughout the year, the spirit of Vernon House has shone
through from all of its members. We’ve seen record numbers
of willing participants signing up to represent their House and
great support at team events.
House Captains were fantastic from the outset, getting
younger pupils involved, working on the charity committee,
organising and doing assemblies. They were a delight for the
House staff to work with and their infectious, unwavering
enthusiasm was appreciated and admired by those further
down the school.
The new First Years came in bubbling with confidence and
their first real ‘event’ was the House Christmas party,
organised superbly by Warren this year, so hats off to them for
such a splendid do. The Vernon First Years were clearly the
best looking, most charming, the hippest dancers, most coolly
dressed and, as it turned out, the best when it came to the
First Year quiz! Maybe all the fizzy drinks and promise of
pizza were what did it, but certainly they scored highly and
won clearly; a great result.
This was followed up by First Year boys coming second in the
basketball as the sporting season got under way. Rugby
matches were delayed due to poor weather, but also due to
school sports success in regional and national competitions;
by late spring we had the results in.
Chess was an exciting and tense autumn event, taking place
over three weeks of lunchtimes. We had a super number of
potential competitors willing to take part and just as many
coming along to show their support. Until I took over as Head
of House, I had never realised how exciting a competitive
chess match could be!
The Sixth Form Christmas pantomime showcased some great
talent. Particularly impressive was that the whole story was
written in rhyming couplets by our very own Ollie Mills. It
was a fun assembly, with inspired costumes and it was
impressively executed by the cast. Well done and a big thank
you to all those who took part.
The annual Swimming Gala took place in February and
Vernon scored highly, with some stunning swims, great team
work and a whole heap of enthusiasm. Alas, we did not score
quite highly enough to beat Warren; next year, perhaps?
