The Stopfordian 2011–2012
CAREERS CONVENTION
On 26 th November, Stockport Grammar opened its doors to
representatives from universities, apprenticeship providers
and many professions from up and down the country. This is
a biennial occasion where pupils from Fourth Year to Sixth
Form, along with their parents, are given the opportunity to
find out about degrees, professions and courses by speaking
directly to specialists. With over 80 representatives present
from professions ranging from the army to solicitors’ firms, the
atmosphere in the Dining Hall was buzzing; there was a sense
of enthusiasm in the air with questions flying through the
room. The night was a very useful and enjoyable experience
and many pupils gained from the occasion.

CHARITIES
VERNON SHOW 2012
The hotly anticipated Vernon Show of summer 2012
showcased a range of talent from all age groups in the school.
There were a range of musical and comic talents and a strong
presence from the lower school this year, including a unique
comedy act from Arisha-Jane Marsh, original music from Lara
O’Donohue, a duet from Georgia Burns and Molly Royle, as
well as a star turn from ‘Those Fours Girls’, a singing and
dancing girl group from 1S.
Vernon House stalwart, Ismaeel Ramzan contributed an
entertaining act with his regular ‘crew’and Ed Robinson
stepped in too, as well as his own stellar performance with
Jamie Simpson, which had everyone ‘hippity-hopping’ back to
period 4 after the show! Ade Ferguson and Natalie Clarke
played an extremely well-received acoustic set and the Special
Guests of the show, ‘One Education’ provoked a lively amount
of audience participation. Special thanks must go to Chris
Holleworth, Alexander Longson and their team for organising
the sound and thanks also to Adam Griffiths for doing the
lighting. The two shows, despite depleted audiences, due to
study leave, raised £334.00 for the House charities.
‘ONE EDUCATION’ COME TO SGS!
Imagine my delight when I heard that the boy-band of my
teenage years; those heart-throbs I had papered my bedroom
walls with; those dream-boats I had wept over when they split
due to ‘artistic differences’ were playing here. Here at SGS. My
place of work. Mr. Moore rolled his eyes cynically as I leapt
around screaming in delight. I dug out my faded, but still very
wearable ‘One Education’ t-shirt and put it on! I dug out my 12”
singles and the vinyl copies of all their albums and wished
desperately that I still owned a record player! The Vernon Show
was going to be full of talented people and now was also going
to feature my all time favourite band. I was BEYOND excited.
I knew the audiences at the Vernon Show would love them as
they have recently had one of their hits covered by a new band
known as ‘One Direction’. These young men do a reasonable
job of the song, ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ but are not a
patch on the original version.
