The Stopfordian 2011–2012
UNDER 12 NETBALL
The Under 12 netball squad this season composed of almost
all the girls in the First Year! Their enthusiasm and dedication
to training made selecting teams every week a very difficult
task. At their first fixture against Wilmslow High School
players eagerly warmed up on the outside courts waiting to
hear what position they would be playing. To my delight they
did not disappoint the supporters with a clean sweep of First
Year results; 4-2, 10-1 and 4-0.
Their determination continued in training as they developed
their knowledge and understanding of the game. Some great
wins in the season came against; Bolton 24-2, Bury 18-7 and
Werneth 10-4. They reached the final of the Stockport
Schools’ competition where they faced Cheadle Hulme High
School. Narrowly losing the final, the girls were still delighted
with their first taste of success. A special thanks to all players;
it has been a pleasure to coach you and I hope you are all
looking forward to next season.

CRICKET
Despite the challenging weather of the summer, our cricket
teams played many matches and achieved a great deal of
success. Pick of the teams were the U12 and U14 XIs who
were both winners of their respective Cheshire Cup
competitions. The two sides will now represent Cheshire in
National competitions in the summer of 2013.
On the coaching front, Jimmy Ormond (ex England) joined
the staff as 1st XI coach. We hope that his stay with us will be
a long and successful one.
My sincere thanks go to the following staff who committed so
much time and energy into running the teams: Messrs.
Bowden, Corbett, Howarth, Moore, Ormond, Urwin and
Wallington.

1ST XI CRICKET
The most rainfall for one hundred years made life difficult for
cricket teams all over the country. Large numbers of fixtures
were cancelled, practice was reduced to the bare minimum
and general enthusiasm was sapped by the damp, cold
conditions. It was challenging for players, coaches and
grounds' staff alike. A special mention of Phil, John and the
Grounds' Staff at SGS must be made. As well as putting in
extra hours on the main square to improve practice and
playing facilities, they also went out of their way to ensure the
artificial nets (that regularly became waterlogged) were
available for use. A big thank you to all!
Despite the rain, there was some entertaining cricket on display
this season. The weather may have prevented high scoring
matches but low scoring games, where bowlers are on top, can
make for tense and thrilling cricket. A notable victory over
King’s Macclesfield in the first game of the season, and
determined displays against Cheadle Hulme School and the
MCC (the only game played in glorious sunshine in late May)
showed the boys’ character and skill. However, when this team
looks back on the season, they will undoubtedly be
disappointed with the results. At times, this talented group
needed to exhibit greater discipline and will to win, especially
