525 EVENTS
2012 represented an important milestone in the life of
Stockport Grammar School, as we celebrated 525 years since
the School’s foundation by Sir Edmond Shaa, Mayor of
London and Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths’ Company. A
programme of celebrations was devised to mark the
continuation of his vision of a school that would nurture
intellect, foster character and provide opportunity for the
children of Stockport.

The special year was also marked with a fundraising initiative
in support of the School’s continuing bursary campaign to
help bright children from all backgrounds fulfil their potential.
525 th Anniversary Reception at Goldsmiths’ Hall
Old Stopfordians, Governors, parents, representative staff and
pupils and members of the Goldsmiths’ Company gathered at
Goldsmiths’ Hall in London on 2 nd May as part of the
anniversary celebrations. The reception celebrated the
ongoing relationship which began with the foundation of the
School by Sir Edmond Shaa, Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths’
Company and Mayor of London. Speeches by Clerk to the
Goldsmiths’ Company Dick Melly, Chairman of Governors
Richard Rimmington and Headmaster Andrew Chicken
focussed on the connection between the Company and the
School, the present day achievements of pupils and staff and
the importance of the bursary campaign that accompanies the
525th anniversary celebrations.
