Erratum from last year, the Head Boy and Head Girl from 2010 - 2011 were Ben Jones and Hannah Hartas-Pearson HEADMASTER’S REPORT The London Olympics and Paralympics have been an inspiration for many. I spent hours in front of the television marvelling at the achievements of the athletes. You just knew that once the Games were over there would be an edict from on high. We did not have to wait long: compulsory team games for all children. Not unexpected, but somewhat ironic I thought, given that most Olympic events are individual, rather than team efforts. The call should have been for high quality P.E. teaching in schools, providing all pupils with the opportunity to learn skills, improve their fitness and to develop an interest in a wide range of activities, one of which might be, playing in a team. This is something, I believe, we do very successfully at Stockport Grammar. One of the messages that came repeatedly from athletes was how hard they had worked over the last four years preparing for their events. The countless hours, spent training made the difference; a win or place on the podium was often measured in seconds or parts of seconds. We try to instil in the children we teach, the importance of effort and perseverance; not to give up when things get difficult, or mistakes are made. To accept that they will not always be successful, but to keep trying to improve in everything they do. As well as teaching them the things they need to know, we want them to develop their thinking skills, to become independent learners, to be creative. As they face a world of change they will need to solve problems yet to materialise. One of Einstein’s phrases seems particularly apt: ‘We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.’ It is a privilege, as I often say, to share in the children’s learning and achievements. ‘Life should not be measured in the number of breaths we take,’ goes the saying, ‘but in the number of moments that take our breath away.’ Moments Junior School 111
